Inaccuracies[edit]

I just changed the junction template to NYint. But I did note a couple of inaccuracies that need noting: NY 5S passes over/under the Thruway at two points, but neither are in the town of Root (they are to the west). Plus, I-890 needs to be included at the eastern terminus, and a note that I-790's western terminus is at NY 5S's western terminus.Fwgoebel 04:44, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Thruway crossing and I-790 issues have been fixed. There is no need to include I-890 at the east end as I-890 ends at the exit prior to NY 5S, leaving only NY 890. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 01:12, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Under the current configuration, yes. point taken. In my mind though 5S used to end at I-890, I used to drive that daily so it's engrained in my mind as being that way. Now, I don't even use 5S in that area at all.02:48, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

NY 169[edit]

My map shows that NY-169 begins at the Thruway and crosses NY-5S in the northwest corner of Danube, New York, not Little Falls. Stepp-Wulf 01:23, 16 March 2007 (UTC).[reply]

See response at Talk:New York State Route 169. I'll give you the town of Danube as the terminus is just outside the city limits of Little Falls, but it does terminate at NY 5S, which merely passes under the connection to the Thruway. Fwgoebel 02:25, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

History notes[edit]

  • Established in 1930
    • Orignal routing was Oneida (NY 5)-Rome-Utica-Little Falls-Schenectady (NY 5). In Oneida it used 365A and 365 to Rome, then 69 to Utica (overlapped with then NY 49), then 5A and 5S to Rotterdam, then Rice Rd and River Rd to Schenectady (parts have been paved over by I-890 or abandoned). Portions of the routing were marked as "under construction" in 1930.
    • Appears to have been shortened to Verona (NY 31) by 1938, which shows 365 and 5S overlapping between Rome and Verona, and only 365 between Oneida and Verona.
  • Construction of I-890 is likely the reason why the east end was truncated to Rotterdam. Extension of 69 east from Rome to Utica appears to be when 5S was truncated to Utica.
  • Relocated to a new road between Whitesboro and Mohawk. There are stretches of local road known as "Old NY-5S".
  • Prior to 1930, Utica-Mohawk was part of pre-1930 NY 28. Oneida-Rome was unnumbered; Utica-Rome was part of pre-1930 76 (became 49 in 1930); Mohawk-Amsterdam as unnumbered or unconstructed; Amsterdam-Schenectady was unnumbered. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Polaron (talkcontribs) 20:07, 1 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The Schoharie Creek Thruway bridge collapse in the 1980s should be given some mention here since part of 5S was used as a detour for the Thruway while the bridge on the Thruway was rebuilt. I don't have access to newspaper archives, so I can't help on that front. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 20:44, 1 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Items for future expansion:

  • Reroutings onto super-2s and expressways
  • Schoharie Creek bridge collapse/detour (1987)

The New York Routes link at the bottom of the page has tidbits on both. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 00:18, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • "It extends for 72.92 miles (117.35 km) from an interchange with NY 5, NY 5A, NY 8, NY 12, and Interstate 790 (I-790) in Utica" - that's a lot. And that's just the first half of the sentence. Could you simplify? Maybe mention the connection with NY 5A here?
  • " when the first set of posted routes in New York were assigned" - don't overlink
  • "At this interchange, I-790 is concurrent with NY 5, NY 8, and NY 12 along Utica's North–South Arterial" - this seems like jargon, unless, is that the name of the road?
  • "Not far to the east is an interchange for Turner Street" - could you word it other than "not far'?
  • The Route Description could use a few more commas where there is already a natural pause
  • 3rd paragraph of Route Description is unsourced
  • "A super two extension of the freeway east to Mohawk was completed sometime after 1982 (actually in 1992)" - wha?
  • "On April 5, 1987, the bridge carrying the New York State Thruway over Schoharie Creek collapsed." - when was the bridge rebuilt? That's recent enough that you should be able to find out. It also seems like the most significant history for the route in recent-ish years

The refs look good. The article is in pretty good shape, so it shouldn't be too difficult to address these issues. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 03:24, 9 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Comments[edit]

@Hurricanehink: I think I fixed everything so far except the "completed by 1992" part. I can't find a source anywhere that shows or says when it was completed by. Do you have any ideas on where I could look? If not I can change the wording and add a later map. Let me know, thanks, 420Traveler (talk) 02:32, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Check newspapers. I recommend the Observer-Dispatch, which seems like the largest local newspaper. If you don't have access to Newspapers.com, check with fellow project members. Someone should have that. It'll help make the article feel more complete having that certainty (for an event within the last 30 years). ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:15, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Mitchazenia: Thanks Mitch, are there any articles that say when the super-two was opened from Frankfort to Mohawk? Thanks, 420Traveler (talk) 18:56, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Not found yet. Mitch32(sail away with me to another world.) 17:48, 13 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Hurricanehink: Unless I missed something, I have fixed everything and it should be ready. Thanks, 420Traveler (talk) 02:29, 16 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
