The settlement of Neffs, Ohio, might not seem like a very important topic, but it's really a perfect example of how westward expansion took place into the Ohio Territory even before it became a state in 1803. George Neff was my great grandfathers' grandfather (yes, both of my Neff great grandfathers). George Neff started the Neff Lumber Company by McMahon Creek, and the area grew from that. He and his wife, Margaret Ann Helms, had 6 sons and three daughters, and 5 of the boys had original land grants in Belmont County, Ohio. George's younger brother, Conrad Neff, settled farther south near the mouth of Captina Creek at Powhatan Point. Conrad remarried; he had 2 children by his first wife, and 12 more by his second. I have photocopies, made at the Ohio Historical Society Library about 1967, of the page I cite for the article; but I do not seem to have a record of the publisher* of the book.
