road identification for Boyd School[edit]

An anonymous IP editor added "County Road 201" to change the location field for Boyd School to: "Northwest of Berlin on County Road 201 (Fryburg-Fredericksburg-Boyd Rd.)", but then the change was reverted. Why not accept that? I assume that almost any small change like that from local editor is a good one. I can't imagine that is vandalism.

The coords involved are: 40°34′56″N 81°49′12″W / 40.58222°N 81.82000°W / 40.58222; -81.82000 (Boyd School (originally used coords, from NRIS(?)))

Further note: Fredericksburg and Fryburg are communities north of the Boyd School on County Road 201. I see that by checking Google maps. Can't find a "Boyd" in this area, in Google maps. My guess is that Boyd is a hamlet where the Boyd School is. It seems like the edit was a good one, to me. --doncram (talk) 12:49, 4 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Umm, it's called WP:V. It's not vandalism (I didn't say that it was), but there's no source supporting the inclusion of County Road 201, and a statement posited on "field check" is blatantly original research. Nyttend (talk) 13:39, 4 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's on County Road 201, as shown in Google maps. We accept coordinates corrections and other location corrections all the time, without explicit sourcing in the form of inline citations. I am returning that to the article. --doncram (talk) 21:32, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Google Maps is not a reliable source: it has tons of small errors, and changes based on unreliable sources are no more acceptable than original research. Try navigating in many rural areas in Ohio, and you'll find that the names or numbers given by Google are unknown by the locals: we must go by what's said by our original sources, which are composed by locals. Nyttend (talk) 12:09, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Nyttend, i believe this thread started because a local, who appears to know, and further who has just now recently added local pics, made the first edit. I commented, at first, because i think i have seen this happen in other locales, where I perceive that your editing is sometimes unnecessarily harsh upon the local knowledge shown by editors. In many areas you or I have been, though, I believe that we change coordinates and other location information fairly freely to what we believe/know to be correct. Here, I am not myself familiar with the ground, but I think you are not local, and I believe that the local editor knowledge is that the place is on County Road 201. --doncram (talk) 14:14, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Further, Nyttend's latest edit summary was "Sorry, Google Maps is not a reliable source; it's useful, but it has tons of errors". However, Nyttend is fully aware that the NRIS database that is the source for the other name of the road is itself ridden with errors; i believe that NRIS has a higher error rate than does Google maps. We work with "reliable" but imperfect sources all the time, and use judgement and "local knowledge". --doncram (talk) 14:48, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Actual location is 40.579652,-81.820207. This is based on standing on the site (6134 CR 201. Google maps (satellite view) shows the school, oriented in an east-west direction (front facing the west), on the east side of the road. A house is just north of it. The school is on a slight rise, not visible in Google.--Chris Light (talk) 16:22, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I invited Chris Light to comment on this school location. Given this extra info, i am going to restore the road info and also update the coords, in this list article. To Chris Light: in general, we have been welcoming updated location info, especially for coordinates where we know that the NRHP's NRIS database info is off (in part because of a geographic systems change in 1985 which moved the coordinate system relative to old U.S. Geological Survey topo maps that were often used as source for NRHP nominators). Thanks. --doncram (talk) 16:33, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Those new coords are 40°34′47″N 81°49′13″W / 40.579652°N 81.820207°W / 40.579652; -81.820207 (Boyd School (coords refined)). For comparison to old coords using Google/Bing linked map. --doncram (talk) 17:11, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
