History

Nahuizalco es un poblado de origen prehispánico. Originalmente fue habitado por pipiles, y en la época colonial la región perteneció a la Provincia de los Izalcos. De acuerdo a una crónica de 1586, se estimaba que los residentes no llegaban a 200 personas. -Nauhizalco is a village of pre-Hispanic origin. It was originally inhabited by the pipil people, and in colonial times, the region was part of the Izalco providence. A chronicle in 1586 estimated that there were less than 200 people living in Nahuizalco.

In the same document a description is given of the people of Nahuizalco. There was a population of 2,790 "Indians" divided into 825 families and a population of 190 "ladinos" divided into 41 families.

A iniciativa de los pueblos indígenas que han luchado por su reconocimiento, la Alcaldía de Nahuizalco emitió una Ordenanza Municipal sobre Derechos de las Comunidades Indígenas Asentadas en el Municipio de Nahuizalco (publicada en el Diario Oficial del 6 de julio de 2011, Núm.126 Tomo 392) constituyéndose en la primera normativa de este tipo en la historia de El Salvador. -Inspired by initiatives of the indigenous peoples who have fought for their acknowledgement, the city government of Nahuizalco signed a municipal ordinance declaring the rights of the established indigenous communities in the municipality of Nahuizalco (published in the official journal on July 6th, 2011, Núm.126 Tomo 392).
