Jacob Abbot quote[edit]

the article's text reads "Dimov also wrote on the topic of the ancient Macedonians, quoting British historian Jacob Abbot that their language was unintelligible to the Greeks."

however, Abbot wrote "ALEXANDER THE GREAT was king of Macedon, which, though lying north of Greece proper, was still itself essentially Greek in the language and character of its people". Abbott, Jacob (1855). The Story Of Ancient History: From The Earliest Periods To The Fall Of The Roman Empire p. 89. 109.242.181.210 (talk) 21:09, 24 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The "Jacob Abbot" (one "T") referred to in the source is a British historian. The book you've presented is apparently by American Jacob Abbott. Thus, I'll restore the text but remove the interwiki to the article of the American. Thanks. --Local hero talk 07:04, 25 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
This is the same person Jacob Abbott. See the cited source: The Story of Ancient History: From the Earliest Periods to the Fall of the Roman Empire Jacob Abbott; Harper & Brothers, 1855 - Children's stories. In the book it is claimed the opposite, i.e. that the Macedonian language was essentially Greek, see on p. 89. There is not available data about an 19th century English historian named Jacob Abbot and his writings about the Ancient Macedonians, etc. The cited Macedonian author Blaže Ristovski has been criticized as a biased researcher. It is well known, for example, that Ristovski was the editor-in-chief of the controversial and subsequently suspended Macedonian Encyclopedia. This was done because it was full of falsifications and hate speech. As result he was removed from the post. Blaze Ristovski was discharged from his duties at a session of the Macedonian Academy of Arts and Sciences, MANU. Jingiby (talk) 08:41, 25 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe we adjust the wording to state "...perhaps misquoting Jacob Abbot that..." --Local hero talk 06:35, 26 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It is possible that the Russian translation was incorrect. It is also possible that Ristovski made a mistake or deliberately misquoted the text. It is more interesting if there is an opportunity to see the primary source, that is, what Dimov actually wrote. In my opinion, this sentence should be moved to the talk page until the matter is clarified. Jingiby (talk) 06:55, 26 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Dimov also wrote on the topic of the ancient Macedonians, quoting British historian Jacob Abbot that their language was unintelligible to the Greeks.[1][2][dubious ][better source needed]

Dimov does indeed write about Яковъ Аботтъ in reference to the ancient Macedonians (pg. 3-4 at this link). I'll restore the sentence to the article. --Local hero talk 03:57, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, but in this case the author is Jacob Abott and the misinterpretation was done by Dimov himself. Jingiby (talk) 04:39, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
