Part of me wants to call this I-AAA independents, but I guess that wouldn't be proper since NDSU and SDSU do sponsor football and not sponsoring football is what makes a team I-AAA. However, it is somewhat inappropriate for this to only be referred to as a basketball structure since most of the teams that are independent here are independent in other sports. --Cliedl 07:37, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Schools transitioning[edit]

I removed three schools from this page which should NOT be added back again:

-North Dakota: has announced their intentions to move to Division I, but have not begun the process yet.
-South Dakota: have announced that they will investigate the feasibility of moving to D-I, but have not officially announced that they will make the move.
-Cal State Bakersfield: are moving to D-I, but are not playing a full Division I schedule, therefore not including them as a Division I member at this time.

Once these schools move along with their reclassification, they should reappear here. --fuzzy510 07:51, 19 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

deletion of the page[edit]

there is no longer a need for this page since the independent schools that helped form the basketball league have gone to conferences, also there is already a NCAA Independents page. Dgreco

Stop deleting Houston Baptist!, they are DI independent starting in 2007. They left the NAIA in 2006-2007 for DI.

Until I, or anyone else, can find something that says they'll be competing as a D-I independent in 2007-2008 (NOT something that just says that they're moving), they're not going on the list. Transition in the NCAA is a very sticky subject, and it's not as clear-cut as it may seem. --fuzzy510 02:16, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Uh...beg pardon? Why in the world is NCAA Independents redirecting here, where there's only info about basketball teams, when there are still at least a few indies in football? For instance, last I checked, Notre Dame was still indy... --Duneflower, resident weirdo 12:07, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Good question. If someone doesn't beat me to the punch, I'll convert that into a disambiguation page as soon as I get a chance. NCAA Independents should link to all independents, regardless of sport (like you mentioned, Duneflower) or division (I know there's a I-FCS independents page, and I think there's a D-II or D-III page as well). --fuzzy510 15:52, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Done! Thanks for pointing that out, it definitely wasn't proper for it to be as it was. --fuzzy510 20:01, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Competition in NCAA Championship[edit]

I don't know the answer to the question of how these schools compete in the championship or if they are allowed to. Obviously schools still in transition like CSUB won't be able to, but if they are full Div-I members but not in a conference, is it possible for them to be included in the seedings for the NCAA championship, and if so how would that work? Chicago State is no longer an independent...[edit]

http://greatwestconference.cstv.com/index-main.html

According to the Great West site, Chicago State has joined that conference starting today... (October 22, 2008...) Just wanted to let the people who edit the article know... Also, I don't think Seattle University will join the Great West any time soon...

Edit: (October 31, 2001 at 11:06 EST) Out of sheer curiousity, does anyone know which conference(s) Longwood University is interested in, or has applied to, joining? I know Savannah State, despite the fact that they don't have a future conference affiliation at the moment, is interested in joining the MEAC, but I've never really heard which conference(s) Longwood would join... If I had to guess, it would be Big South as a non-football member, though I'm not sure... That's why I'm asking... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.217.3.126 (talk) 03:08, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

map[edit]

the map contradicts the teams: there are teams from california, washington, virginia, north carolina and georgia, but california is not highlighted on the map.

About the schools that still don't have a future conference affiliation...[edit]

This includes Cal State Bakersfield, Savannah State, Seattle, and Longwood... (And I also guess NC Central...) I know Bakersfield is eyeing the Big West and same with Savannah State with the MEAC and Seattle with the WCC, though what about Longwood? Anyone have any clue what conference they're eyeing? I was curious about what conference they wanted to join because I haven't really read anywhere on which conference they're interested in joining... I thought they were in the same case as Texas Pan-American who stayed independent for a while before joining the Great "West", but now I'm wondering what conference(s) they're interested in since they declined an invitation into the Great West...

Also, has NC Central officially been accepted into the MEAC? I know they're looking to re-join, but I haven't seen on the site that NC Central is officially affiliated with the conference... (Kinda like how Bryant is affiliated with the NEC but won't be a core member with voting rights until 2012 and same with SIUE with the OVC...)

Future conference affiliation is NOT current conference affiliation[edit]

Future conference affiliation or not, these teams are independent for the time being, and must be acknowledged as such. They do not have conference play. Just because a team will join a conference a some point is irrelevant. I will add the current teams that credible sources such as Sports Illustrated believe are independents. If there needs to be more discussion, here's the place. Brianreading (talk) 21:03, 9 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

According to Longwood's athletic site, there's an article (Linked by the site...) on Longwood's former interests in joining a particular conference...[edit]

Long title, I know... Apparently, Longwood was looking to join the Big South when they were moving up to Division I... The Big South rejected, or set aside, their bid for joining... Afterwards, it seemed like they wanted to join a lot of other "regional" conferences like the A-Sun (Which I'm actually quite surprised that they didn't take Longwood...), Northeast Conference (NEC...), America East, and the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference... (MEAC...)

The only conference invitation they flat out rejected was that of an invitation to the Great "West" Conference... (NJIT would have been their "travel partner", most likely...) Just wanted to post this because I never knew, before this, what conference Longwood was ever interested in joining in their move to Division I... Personally, as of now, their best chances would be getting into the A-Sun to re-boost the conference's number back to 12...

Get ready for a major edit...[edit]

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference just dropped their membership moratorium effective immediately as of February 23, 2009... They want to expand to 12 football members and 14 full-time members... Unless the MEAC board surprises us by adding Longwood University into their rosters, then there should be no reason why North Carolina Central University and Savannah State University shouldn't make it into the conference... (The MEAC site even said they're reviewing those two universities' applications into the conference...)

NC Central should make it without any doubt... Savannah State, unless the MEAC throws out the probation Savannah State has currently with the NCAA and decides to add them before the date, should make it into the conference once their probation ends on May 18th, 2009...

Though honestly, the A-Sun was stupid for not adding Longwood to their rosters to re-boost their membership to twelve members... (Considering Longwood is doing decently in basketball right now... Heck, they even beat a member that's transitioning currently... Kennesaw State University...)

number of schools[edit]

The articles states that there are 7 schools, w/2 having a conference lined, but I only see 6 & 1 in each category. Is a school missing or did a school transition and the page wasn't updated?75.164.208.19 (talk) 20:53, 2 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion about overview maps for US collegiate athletic conferences[edit]

A discussion on the Project College Football talk page has been created to discuss the proper format of the overview maps that are used for the US collegiate athletic conference pages.

Chronology/History membership timeline needed[edit]

Just wondering, I believe that this article needs a chronology or history timeline of all the members schools within the NCAA Division I, II and III that were once Independents for primarily all of their sports programs, and especially basketball to be specific most of the time. Here's an example: The University of Texas-Pan American was formerly an Independent for most of their sports, including basketball, from 1998-99 to 2007-08. jlog3000 (talk) 23:49, 22 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Basketball[edit]

Why is basketball not included in this article? Jailbird222 (talk) 03:21, 28 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah. I wonder that myself. Not even those that once competed at such, even as former independent schools for all sports. And there had been lots over the years and decades since the NCAA's inception. jlog3000 (talk) 02:04, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Chicago State[edit]

Chicago State will be leaving the Western Athletic Conference effective July 1st of this year. They've made no mention about joining another conference, and if that remains true for a few more months they'll become an independent for all sports. Shouldn't this fact be noted somewhere on this page? Quattrovalvole (u/t, s s/t) 22:16, 14 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
