Pronunciation

My family (who live in Berrigan) pronounce it /mʌlˈweɪlə/, i.e. rhyming with "whaler" rather than with "parlour" as the article currently claims. I live in Berrigan and pronounce it /mʌlˈweɪlə/ as well, as does everyone living there. The only time I have ever heard /mʌlˈwɑːlə/ used was on the Melbourne news! However, the pronunciation given in the article is supported by a reliable source. Unfortunately, if we are to change the pronunciation, we would need another source - with more authority than the one cited - to support the change. Our personal opinion on the pronunciation doesn't count as "The threshold for inclusion in Wikipedia is verifiability", not truth—that is, whether readers are able to check that material added to Wikipedia has already been published by a reliable source, not whether we think it is true". Changing the pronunciation based on our own knowledge would be classed as original research. If you can find a reliable source agreeing with our pronunciation, great! - We can then make a change. I have also lived and worked in the area. In "Mul" itself you hear two pronunciations, Mull-whaler as noted above, and also (less commonly, I think) Mull-woller. The "official" rhymes-with-parlour pronunciation, as noted above, is definitely wrong. However it is harder to be sure than one would think because in practice, the town is actually almost always just called "Mul."

And while we're on the subject of verifiable sources and no original research, "Mul" hasn't had a train station for years, and the wheat silo was pulled down in summer of 2007-8. Its former location is now occupied by a small housing development. Alas, I have no verifiable source for this other than my own two eyes ... -- 203.20.101.203 (talk) 05:21, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
