Language[edit]

I changed the language in the introductory paragraph from "German" to the more specific "Low German" reflecting the prevalence of Plattdeutsch historically spoken in the Mountain Lake. I also redirected the link from the German language to the Low German language page. I believe this makes the article more accurate because although the more educated residents would have known both, I believe that historically, the primary language was Plattdeutsch. Who really coined the name: Mountain Lake?[edit]

MASON or SOULE The cited (history of railroad place names) reference indicates the village was named by A. A. Soule. However, the city's own website indicates that it was William Mason. (Unfortunately, I missed out on Henry Schmidt's Mountain Lake History class!) Can anyone shed light on why the two different stories and which one is correct? The problem here is that the book A History of the Origin of the Place Names Connected with the Chicago & North Western and Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha Railways (Place Names) tells a conflicting story, attributing the name to early settler A.A. Soule rather than Mason. It is the only source I could find to do so. Although Soule is indeed an early settler, in my research, no other account could corroborate this particular account.

The city website's account attributing the naming to Mason is confirmed both by Ferdinand P. Schultz's The Settlement of German Mennonites from Russia at Mountain Lake Minnesota (p. 42) and the Centennial Committee's own 1886-1986 Centennial book. This is confirmed by the circa 1970 History of Mountain Lake by John P. Jungas. All three ignore the Place Names account. On page 43 of his work, Schultz (p.43) indicates Soule was an 1869 émigré', while Mason arrived in 1865. Page 81 of John A. Brown (ed.), History of Cottonwood and Watonwan counties, Minnesota confirms that Mr. Soule arrived in 1869 - actually purchasing some of his land from Mr. Mason.

After a couple weeks to chew on this problem, I have found the Ferdinand Schulz history, the John P. Jungas account, the editorial committee of the official Mt. Lake Centennial book, and the city's own website all attributing the naming of the town and lake to William Mason. I concur. Jsniessen (talk) 20:50, 9 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

"Laid out" vs. "Platted"[edit]

What makes a city a city? We know there were residents here prior to the official platting of the village. The initial, two-sentence, history of Mountain Lake included a reference to the 'A History of the Origin of the Place Names Connected with the Chicago & North Western and Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha Railways' book which says the town was quote "laid out in 1870". However, a MHS publication 'Minnesota Geographic Names: Their Origin and Historic Significance' uses the more specific term quote "was platted" and cites "May 25, 1872". I chose to go with the more specific term (with legal significance) and specific date in this case, but retained as an external link a pointer to the C&NW Place names book for reference purposes.Jsniessen (talk) 19:51, 15 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hutterites[edit]

I have proposed to Dan Holsinger that we move the information he recently added to the Mountain Lake article over to the Mountain Lake Township article. I think this would be the most appropriate place for this in light of the fact that the [Elmendorf Christian Community]/colony is completely rural and resides within the township itself and no Hutterites actually reside in the city of Mountain Lake. Mountain Lake, MN - City of" vs. "Populated place" - I have been informed by a senior editor who maintains all the cities within Kansas that the correct USGS designation to look for is Populated Place.
