Thanks Hike395 for adding a photo. This iconic peak ought to have a photo! Seeing your addition I recalled taking a photo of it from highway 2. New photo (July 2013)[edit]

Chute ascent correction[edit]

Lionel Chute's ascent has been to some extent misremembered and miswritten. It was partially corrected in 2004 by historian Harry Majors. Chute actually climbed the North Peak only as far as the first false summit. That is based on Majors' interview of Chute and Otto Trott in the 1970s. Majors also reported that the climb was August 7, 1927 with Scout Frank Hill, per a Everett Daily Herald article of Aug 9, 1927 that Majors reviewed. Majors' account on cascadeclimbers is best accessed through this Google webcache. However, I also found a July 21, 1977 Seattle Times page F9 article that describes the discovery by climber Brian Billdt of the capsule left by Lionel Chute and Frank Hill. It was in a different location, only 2/3 of the way up the North Peak on its east face. It was on a piece of newspaper dated 1927. Billdt called and talked to Lionel Chute, who reportedly confirmed that there were both 1927 and 1929 trips. So Majors seems to be authoritative on the highest point that Chute achieved, the false summit of the North Peak. But that was done in 1929, presumably July 4th as Chute remembered.
