The Comparison of different modes of passenger transport table[edit]

In Talk:Transport#Table, there is a table comparing the various transport modes. However, it was taken out of the main Transportation article on the grounds that it was considered original research (see discussion in Talk:Transport#Table for details). If someone does try to resurrect it or back it up with citable sources, then it should be moved to this article instead of the Transportation article. Aircraft isn't the same as Aeroplane / Airplane[edit]

There is a contention going on about the use of Aeroplane vs. Airplane, which is of course simply a matter of national preference. However, this article, and the aeroplane article, are now using the word "Aircraft" to mean aeroplane. This is clearly incorrect. Aircraft, in the correct usage, means any man-YJURUmade, powered flying machine : it includes helicopters and balloons. Sometimes the term "fixed-wing aircraft" is used; this has been made up, and is not used outside Wikipedia. It is also incorrect, as some aeroplanes have swing wings, and some aircraft that are not aeroplanes (like Gyrodynes) have fixed wings.

I've made changes to the article to reflect this.

FYI people do say "fixed-wing aircraft" outside Wpedia, even if you haven't heard it. It is, as you say, a technically weak term, although that does depend somewhat on how you interpret the word "fixed". 69.76.1.183 12:07, 11 October 2007 (UTC) Ventifact[reply]

Primary means of transportation[edit]

Lift[edit]

Lift is not generated by the old myth of air moving faster over the top of the wing. There is no reason for air to move more quickly over the top of the wing. Lift is generated just like a fan moves air - the wings (or blades) force air downward by impacting the air at an angle (more at angle of attack). Bicycling[edit]

Why does the chart under the 'worldwide comparison of the most important transit' section not include data for bicycles? Found seemingly unnecessary text in section[edit]

At the bottom of the section "[c]ompnents of a mode of transport", I found this:

Purpose of Transport : Freight & Passenger movement and mobility are core components of a transport system.
