Sister City[edit]

Mishawaka has a sister city that should be listed- Shiojiri Japan... it has a park in commemoration of this relationship.

pronunciation[edit]

Every single person I know whom actually lives/was raised in Mishawaka or the surrounding area pronounces it /ˌmɪʃəˈwɔːkə/ (mish-uh-WAW-kuh); the stressed syllable is identical to the word walk. Hearing it pronounced any other way is a giveaway that the speaker is not native to the area (much like stressing the neighbouring city as SOUTHbend instead of the correct southBEND). Wrestling[edit]

Will continue to remove the wrestling reference after high school football for the following reason. Although there is no doubt a great wrestling (as well as volleyball) tradition in Mishawaka high schools, the reference is solely about football. While wrestling is big, the three Mishawaka high schools have won a combined 11 state football championships since 1920, an amazing feat, one that dwarfs the number of state championships by all other of the city's sports teams combined. The wiki article points out that Mishawaka, per capita, is perhaps the most succesful football city in the state over nearly a century. The wrestling reference dilutes this point.

10.2.09 edits[edit]

The legend section has been created so as not to confuse histroy with legend. Wrestling and volleball now have there own sentence. Sister cities have now been added. (See below)

With due respect to posters, it is not petty editing. The section reads as if the legend is history, when in fact, research has proven it is certainly almost all untrue. (See historian Merle Blue's work on the subject at the public library.) It dilutes the actually history of the city. Since it is a "story," it probably doesn't belong at all. Sectioning it off is a nice compromise.

Clearly stating it as legend in the history section would be acceptable. Other articles have similar situations, where exact source of the name is unknown, but the place has a legend about it. The legend is noteworthy and worth inclusion in the history section, as it is a historical legend. Placing a seperate section for legends, and just one paragraph, is not the best good solution. WP:Section recommends have enough content for multiple paragraphs to warrent a new section. Penn High School does indeed have a Mishawaka address. All state championships have now been addresssed, including Mishawaka wrestling which COM is adamant about. Sister Cities is a great new addition. Schmucker is out as it should be (only one of many Middle Schools) and the Legend section is still included, although it is a dubious entry and poorly written. Reverting is now damaging good new material.

Penn is in unincorporated St. Joseph County, so it stays out. Reread the talk page, and the article history, and you'll see you're in the minority. Further edit warring will get you blocked. Crotchety Old Man (talk) 12:51, 8 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

COM is not citing wrestling. Why? Because it is a fact. Citations are not possible for every single entry. BTW, the wrestling sentence is now in error as the number 11 refers to football titles. Read above. The History section is to remain untouched. No one wants it changed to "Legend", except you. And citations should be easy enough to come by for adding the sister cities.
