Someone just made some changes showing that this event supposedly has been around for 62 years. As I've understood, and what all the media has said, it has been around more like 20-some. This needs to be clarified. Sebwite (talk) 05:36, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I would like to see some documentation for the assertion that this event has existed in anything like its current form since 1947. I have worked and lived in the general area since the early 1970s and my recollection is that the block's decoration only became out of the ordinary in the late 1980s. If you look at the web page cited, the people described as the originators of the custom don't appear to be old enough to have started it back then. SHJohnson (talk) 03:50, 17 December 2013 (UTC) The Christian Science Monitor article cited also reports the tradition beginning in the late 1980s; http://www.csmonitor.com/2007/1221/p20s01-ussc.html?page=1 SHJohnson (talk) 04:13, 17 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
