Would it be possible to explain exactly what Debus' portfolio consists of? I'm not sure it's exactly the same as the former home affairs portfolio. Rebecca 12:00, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, thanks. It seems to be Labor's promised "homeland security" ministry under a different name, rather than the home affairs portfolio of old. I wonder if the history and former members might be better going to wherever responsibility for the old territories portfolio (which has been eliminated by Rudd) has gone in the new ministry, seeing as I think that - rather than this - is the continuation of the old one. I think perhaps the Minister for Home Affairs replaces the Minister for Justice and Customs. It's not entirely clear at this stage, however the Governor-General did not appoint a Minister for Justice and Customs, who was previously a junior minister to the Attorney-General just like the Minister for Home Affairs appears now.DirectEdge 09:07, 4 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, that makes sense. They've probably done both - replaced justice and customs with a portfolio focusing broadly around homeland security issues. Any idea where the territories portfolio went? It's not really something that can be eliminated altogether. Rebecca 09:20, 4 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The AAO issued yesterday [1] sheds some light on this. While it doesn't specify which bits the A-G has and which bits the Minister for Home Affairs has, the territories function is part of the overall A-G portfolio responsibility. Presumably territories will handled by Debus rather than by McClelland, but afaik there are no official documents that spell this out. Not yet anyway. -- JackofOz 12:42, 4 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Territories were previously handled by DOTARS (which I used to work for) and is a small function. Clearly Home Affairs is a different portfolio in 2007 than in 1901. It's a bit like the recreation of the electorate of Corinella on a different side of Melbourne, 80 years apart.Grahame (talk) 06:41, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
