Napoleonic Wars[edit]

I have seen referenced in some academic texts that the first overseas engagement the colonials participated in was when a couple of dozen were on the British side of the Napoleonic Wars. It was also during these wars that the colonials suffered their first overseas battle casualties. Can anybody confirm this and add it to the article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 27.32.135.162 (talk) 15:16, 8 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

G'day, yes I believe this is true, although there doesn't seem to be exact information on the numbers of Australians that served. A while back I was working on the Colonial forces of Australia article and added a small amount to that article. The reference to look at is Wilcox's Red Coat Dreaming: How Colonial Australia Embraced the British Army (2009), which is a very interesting account. The contention is that the British Army did not actively recruit from Australia at the time, although it is believed that "hundreds" of Australians served in the British Army. Wilcox identifies at least one Australian, Andrew Douglass White, who served as an engineer officer at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, and another, Spicer Cookworthy, who served as a subaltern in the 1st Regiment of Foot during the Crimean War. It might be worthy of a quick paragraph, although I think it should be discussed first, given that it is already covered in the other article.
