Reason for MBTA acquisition[edit]

The acquisition by the MBTA was approved several years prior to its consummation, and was contracted for when the MBTA leased the line from Franklin Junction to Forge Park from what was then still Conrail. The lease included a purchase option, but the purchase was held up by the breakup of Conrail and some environmental issues which the state did not want to assume liability for. A presentation to the MBTA board was made to request approval of the purchase agreement once these issues were resolved, which also included information about the purchase terms and the prior lease agreement. The principal justification cited by the staff at the time was the ongoing cost of the lease compared to the purchase price, not any expectations of future service to Milford. 207.180.169.36 (talk) 04:55, 18 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
