Pronunciation of surname[edit]

The lede starts:

Mikhail Vasilievich Pletnev (Russian: Михаил Васильевич Плетнёв - Mikhail Vasil'evič Pletnëv ....

This is only of use to Russian speakers, who know that ё is pronounced "yo" (as opposed to unaccented e, which is "ye"). The international pronunciation guide is similarly of no help to most English speakers, whose only exposure to ё is via certain German words, where it is not pronounced the Russian way. It needs to be clearly spelt out that his name is pronounced "Pletnyóv" or "Pletnyóff". Maybe an IPA version would be a good idea.

Which leads me to ask: since Pletnyóv is how it's pronounced, how come it's normally spelt the way we have it, Pletnev? -- Jack of Oz ... speak! ... 11:41, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Because the English is simply a transliteration of the Russian, which treats "yo" as equivalent to "e" for historical reasons. (Cf. "Khrushchev," where the last syllable is actually pronounced with -o-.) Languagehat (talk) 13:15, 7 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure what you mean, since the situation is the same: Russian writes it with an e, and English either transliterates it that way (Potemkin, the usual spelling) or indicates the way it's actually pronounced (Potyomkin, which one rarely sees). Critical response[edit]

I've removed the line All recordings were well received by critics. That's simply not supported by the facts. A quick perusal at [classicstoday.com] indicates his recordings as pianist and conductor have received a mixed response - which is the case for nearly every musician.THD3 (talk) 13:28, 9 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
