I thought the history section had too many "its" and reduced that somewhat, and added some material. I lived in Middleton for about 35 years.Daniel1212 (talk) 15:52, 15 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"Middleton Jail"[edit]

The Essex County Correctional Facility, commonly referred to as the "Middleton jail," is located in Middleton. Located on the highest point in town, it was built around 1990 to replace the obsolete county jails in Lawrence and in Salem. The new Middleton facility opened on Feb. 15, 1991. At the time it closed, the jail in Salem was the oldest operating jail in the United States - operating since 1638.

I wanted to add a tidbit about this, as it is notable in town. But the article as it stands has only a "history," "geography," "demographics," and "notable residents" section. I am not sure where to put such a thing - I don't really want to dedicate a whole section to the jail, but where else would I put it? Maybe it should be a new sub-section of the history section? Also, the population of Middleton has often been quoted as both "with" the inmates and "excluding" them. According to the Essex Count Sheriff's website, "about 990" inmates are housed there, which is more than 10% of the town's population. At one time the jail was about one-sixth of the whole town's population. Of course some sources would be helpful before posting such stuff. Some of the information I got from the County Sherriff's website. Midtempo-abg (talk) 02:55, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
