Rock's motivation[edit]

Rock's motivation in the film is not completely about his not wanting to see his father overshadowed by a robot. The Duke had Tima created so she could run his machine, the Ziggurat, on his behalf. She's an important part of Duke Red's plans.

Rock's real problem is jealousy. He looks up to, and loves, Duke Red, seeing him as his father. Red points out that Rock is not his son, he adopted him after the last war. Red continually belittles and rejects Rock (although Rock keeps doing stupid things out of anger, so you can't really blame Red for that). Whenever Rock tries to please his "father", Red criticises him, and always rejects his love. He commands Rock not to call him "Father".

Tima is the sort-of robotic reincarnation of Red's only child, his dead daughter. Tima doesn't need to resemble Red's daughter at all, Red demands that because he's in grief, he misses her. Tima is likely to replace Rock in Duke Red's affection. THAT'S why Rock is jealous, and wants to destroy Tima.

Plus Rock is a massive dick. And more than a little bit insane.

Just giving a heads up that I and a peer are interested in editing this article to correct grammar, back up already-posted information with citations, trim anything that cannot be cited, and add some comparisons with works such as "Blade Runner" that have similar discourse on robots and A.I.

Voice of Kenichi[edit]

This is probably the second time I delinked Kei Kobayashi from this page. Kei Kobayashi links to a voice actress by the name, while the Kobayashi who voiced Kenichi is a voice actor. Their kanji is different: Male Kei is 小林桂, and Female Kei is 小林希唯. Crboyer (talk) 00:28, 10 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
