Definition of Merton Park - does it include area west of Mostyn Road[edit]

There seems to be a bit of a low key revert war starting over whether Aylward Road is in Merton Park or not.

I drafted the paragraph being disputed back in December 2005 and had to think for a while as to what constituted the Merton Park area. My rational was that it was the area centred on the original Garden Surburb estate developed by John Innes with a bit of a southward extension to include some of the later development in the Kenley Road and Cranleigh Gardens area which, although built later (after the Underground arrived in 1926) to a different architectural style, does retain some of the feel of the Merton Park estate. By setting the western edge as Mostyn Road, I excluded the area north of Rutlish School and the John Innes Park (Watery Lane, Manor Gardens, Sheridan Road amd Church Path) which should probably be included.

The definiton of Merton Park clearly is not easy as the council under took an assessment of the boundaries of the John Innes (Merton Park) Conservation area in 2006 [1].

Although it is within the Merton Park Ward boundary, Aylward Road is not in the Merton Park conservation area and is physically separated from it by Rutlish School's playing fields. It also has a different architectural character. I do not feel that it can be considered park of Merton Park

I propose a revised definition for the area which is slightly reduced as follows:

The approximate boundaries of the Merton Park area can be considered to be Kingston Road (A238) to the north, Dorset Road (B285) and Sandbourne Avenue to the east, Kenley Road to the south and Mostyn Road to the west as well as the area north of Rutlish School and John Innes Park up to the Kingston Road. Additionally, the area north of Kingston Road between Merton Hall Road, Avebury Road and Kingswood Road is often included. Note that this definition of the area does not correspond directly with the Local Government ward of the same name which for administrative convenience includes areas as far south as Morden South railway station.

This definition pulls the eastern and southern boundaries in to correspond more closely with the boundaries of the conservation area (although not exactly) and adds the missing bit of the conservation area. --DavidCane 01:31, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about the edit war 1st time I reverted after just glancing @ the editors name, 2nd I tried to explain in the edit summary.

Any how; I'd question Sandbourne as a boundary, Daybrook or at least Kendour gardens would seem more likely to me, I'll double check but I believe (some) people on Daybrook list their address as Merton Park (not definitive obviously but a good guide). --Nate1481 02:51, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Merton Park boundaries[edit]

Hello - I guess you will see that I am local from my user name (Aylward15)!

The John Innes (Merton Park) Conservation Area is only one aspect of the suburb, and is certainly not definitive. Indeed, the area north of Kingston Road (noted in the revision) is in a different Conservation Area, and everywhere south and east of Erridge & Poplar Roads is excluded.

I would suggest that other measures are considered:

- The John Innes Society defines an "area of benefit", and as the original citing denoted John Innes, I imagine this area is relevant.

- The parish of St Mary's Merton (which has been defined for rather longer), with the 12th Century church at its centre. On these measures, the boundaries of Merton Park would be Kingston Road to the North, Dorset Road & Morden Road to the East, London Road, Crown Lane & Martin Way to the South and Aylward Road to the west - a distinct area on an OS Map.

The point that "Aylward Road is ... physically separated from it [Merton Park] by Rutlish School's playing fields. It also has a different architectural character." is rather spurious - the majority of building in the late 20's/1930 included the areas around Circle Gardens, Tybenham, Cranleigh, Kenley & Daybrook Roads and Sandbourne, Windermere & Grasmere Avenues too, all of which identify as Merton Park!

Perhaps our local Estate Agents - Finch&Co etc should comment!!
