"Mer" is not Latin for sea: that is "mare". Which may or may not be the derivation of the Welsh word "mor" which also means "sea". Oh, dear... Deipnosophista (talk) 14:10, 17 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's more likely IMO that the two words are cognate -- that is, the Welsh word is the "cousin" (so to speak) of the Latin word rather than its grandchild, and the two have a common ancestor even further back. -- pne (talk) 09:25, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding Name Meanings[edit]

An edit to this page in September '22 suggests that, in addition to "great lord", Meredith as a name can also mean "salt and light" or "grace", but there doesn't seem to be much of anything available that backs this up. "salt and light" turns up as a theme in the Bible, but the name Meredith (and its variants) doesn't appear to be used in conjunction with this theme. I've tried looking for a source on this, but haven't had much luck, and would like to get a confirmation or otherwise on the two new meanings that were added to this page. 144.124.40.11 (talk) 14:09, 5 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
