Mary Anne Costello[edit]

There is a belief among those who know more than I do about the relevant families that Melchior Guy Dickens was the grandfather of Mary Anne Costello.

(Mary Anne Costello was the mother of George Canning 1770-1827, and was much pilloried, especially after her son died, for being (1) low born / a stage actress / poor and (2) having been the mother of a prime minister who was a target for a savagely toxic generation of pamphleteers and journalists at a time of economic hardship in the UK (along with heightened political consciousness).

I did not (yet...) find a source for the family connection between Melchior Guy Dickens and Mary Anne Costello, so cannot with a good conscience add it to the entry. I record the connection here, however, in the hope that someone - possibly but not necessarily me at a future date - will find a source and be able to mention the connection in the entry itself.
