Sexual orientation[edit]

I was taken by surprise when reading this article https://www.sbs.com.au/news/new-zealanders-are-on-track-to-elect-the-gayest-parliament-in-the-world to see Whaitiri listed as among Parliament's LGBT MPs, as I had never seen any mention of this before. A quick google shows Whaitiri being named as one of Labour's gay MPs in articles all the way back to 2013, but only in passing. Her orientation doesn't seem to have been touched on in any profiles or interviews of her specifically, or in any personal statement, such as her maiden speech, so there's no first-person indication of how she identifies. Would it be within the bounds of BLP sensitivities to mention her orientation in the article or include her in the category "LGBT members of the Parliament of New Zealand" without such a definitive statement? 2406:E003:18D1:CC01:9E:AE89:373D:7EAE (talk) 14:36, 28 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I made the post above, before I created my account. As it was not terribly visible on this page, I further raised the issue here. The brief discussion that followed has yielded the wording and references that I have just added to this article.MW691 (talk) 03:47, 11 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Her maiden speech does mention giving thanks to her partner Kiri Allan. Mathmo Talk 20:47, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
