Partial name matches?[edit]

Are each of the things linked under Mathematics called "medial" full stop, as opposed to having medial as just part of their name? If medial is part of the name but not a possible form of the whole name, they are what's called "partial title matches", and their inclusion on a DAB page is discouraged. The All pages with titles beginning with Medial link will bring up an index that includes all those pages (among others). I notice, for example, that on the page Medial axis the word medial only appears in that phrase, except in the title of one of the cited references (From the Infinitely Large to the Infinitely Small: Applications of Medial Symmetry Representations of Shape). I don't know whether a medial axis is ever called "a medial." Cnilep (talk) 07:39, 30 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Consonants[edit]

Cnilep, are central consonants ever called "medial"? The OED only gives the obsolete meaning of "voiced unaspirated". Apart, of course, from the separate sense of "(word-)medial". I'm surprised Medial consonant redirects to Central consonant, and I'm almost as surprised that it once was a standalone article. Given the ambiguity of "medial" in this context, I think I'm going to retarget it to the dab page here. Any thoughts? – Uanfala (talk) 14:30, 27 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I think they can be called medial, though I've just looked through a couple of books and not found any examples. In any case, I don't think the usage is common. Pointing to the DAB seems appropriate. Cnilep (talk) 01:02, 29 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It's probably a typo for median. I've edited Central consonant accordingly with a citation.
Searching "medial consonant" on Google Books returns some instances, but they all seem to be referring to word-medial (or perhaps "intervocalic") consonants. So the link to Central consonant on this DAB is definitely inappropriate. Medial consonant should be either re-redirected to Central consonant with {{R from misspelling}} or deleted altogether. If the redirect isn't deleted, it should stay pointed to the dab page as it's ambiguous: it's more or less a generic combination of terms, but it's got a legitimate meaning (and this, in my opinion, trumps any misspellings), and there's also the other proper, if obsolete, use to refer to the voiced stops. – Uanfala (talk) 16:22, 29 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I don't think its necessarily a typo. This seem likely to occur in reference to any of various things: a consonant in (syllable, word) medial position, a voiced stop, a central consonant... I think pointing to the DAB is fine. I also think including Central consonant in the DAB is appropriate. Cnilep (talk) 04:37, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
