Focus[edit]

Surely an article about an electoral ward should at least mention elections and elected representatives. The article is currently a bit of a random travelogue (hence the clean up template I've added). Sionk (talk) 00:41, 16 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Sionk: Electoral wards in Northern Ireland don't actually act as electoral wards. Whilst they do obviously exist, they aren't actually used as they are meant to be, hence you will not find a councillor elected to an electoral ward. Rather you will find councillors elected to the next administrative unit up, in this case District Electoral Areas (DEA), with the amount of wards in a DEA correlating to how many councillors get elected for that DEA, so a DEA consisting of 5 wards elects 5 councillors but not one of them is assigned to any particular ward.

For a direct example, Maze electoral ward is one of five wards that form Downshire West DEA of Lisburn and Castlereagh District [1]. This DEA elects 5 councillors (Lisburn_and_Castlereagh#Councillors). I note that the linked to PDF, which is the official legislation or whatever to do with it calls wards, constituent wards not electoral wards. Maybe they have now officially changed what a ward means to reflect the fact they don't actually elect a councillor, or maybe not. Mabuska ^(talk) 11:58, 16 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It would make more sense, then, for the article to be called Maze, County Down with a redirect from Maze (electoral ward), wouldn't it? The current article seems far more oriented towards the district than the electoral ward. Sionk (talk) 19:03, 16 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
