The "Fifth" GM ??[edit]

Hi. Is Illingworth really the "fifth" Australian Grandmaster (as this article claims) ?

In Over-the-board, and correspondence, Australia has already been represented by 9 GMs:

1. Cecil John Seddon Purdy, 2. Romanas Arlauskas, 3. Lucius Endzelins, 4. Walter Browne, 5. Ian Rogers, 6. Darryl Johansen, 7. Chris Fenwick, 8. Zhao Zong Yuan, 9. David Smerdon,

and now "10. Illingworth"

Walter Browne became a GM in 1969, and represented Australia until 1974. Should we therefore assume he never existed? Ian Rogers no longer represents Australia in tournaments or matches, but no-one's claiming Rogers never existed.

Surely Illingworth is the 6th Over-the-board GM, and tenth overall.

Walter Browne was clearly an American Grandmaster who represented Australia for a while as noted in his wiki. By a long stretch his major contribution to chess was in the US, there's simply no argument. Purdy, Endzelins, Fenwick and Arlauskas were/are correspondence GMs. For the purposes of Wikipedia you shouldn't count them with the OTB GMs (readers not aware of how the titles work will assume they are the same thing). Don't forget FIDE hands out OTB titles while the ICCF, a separate organization handles correspondence titles. I would say Illingsworth is the fifth Australian GM. Hope that helps.
