Maus, Maurits or Maurice?[edit]

There seems to be some discussion how this person should be called.

In his home country, The Netherlands, the inventor of the Gatso speed camera is mostly known as "Maus" Gatsonides:

There has been a book written about him, called Leven als de bliksem, hier is Maus Gatsonides (tr: Live like a lightning, here comes Maus Gatsonides)
The Dutch TR club has a rally named after him: Memorial Maus Gatsonides

However, his birth name seems to be "Maurice":

This article about restoring one of his rally cars calls him Maurice first, but throughout the rest of the article he is called "Maus" (a very common short for "Maurice" in this part of the world)
The official Gatsometer site (the company founded by Gatsonides) list him as Maurice Gatsonides (also in the Dutch version)
The Independent of December 22, 1998 has an obituary about Maurice Gatsonides
2,290 pages on Google

Some sources call him "Maurits" (which was also the name mentioned on nl:Maus Gatsonides and I made the same mistake, based on this TV programme), but I believe the abovementioned sources are accurate. One might assume the company founded by him knows how to write his name!

I moved the article to Maus Gatsonides in February (it used to be called Maurice Gatsonides), but I realize this was from a point of view of the Dutch-speaking world. If the English-speaking world does believe it is better to undo this page move, feel free to do so. Let the abovementioned sources guide your decision.

Thanks Brinkie. I think you've done some great homework. It's a close one. I'd support the reinstatement of it as Maurice, simply because our most reliable English language source (the newspaper obit) spelled it that way and his company does too.

Either way, Maurice, Maus and Maurits should all exist, two of them as redirects. --Dweller 18:23, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
