Why are we not explaining the Metis situation?[edit]

Not sure omission is the way to deal with the Metis here. Why are we taking a side over simply regurgitation of both POV's? Say somthing like " In 2017, the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) and the Province of Ontario recognized this community in Mattawa as an historic rights-bearing Métis community. However the Métis National Council (MNC) has objected to "new Métis" communities, particularly in Ontario despite this legal recognition. .."

I have added a citation where Former MNC president Tony Belcourt describes Mattawa as a Métis community that was later engulfed by the town of Mattawa. This was discussed in the THE STANDING SENATE COMMITTEE ON ABORIGINAL PEOPLES which is a senators committee of Canada. Section35rightsholder (talk) 16:54, 12 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

We need to mention them in the article..along side the First Nations there. Moxy- 17:01, 12 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This source: THE STANDING SENATE COMMITTEE ON ABORIGINAL PEOPLES - EVIDENCE seems to me to have issues, and doesn't really support what it's being used to cite. Belcourt is described thus: Tony Belcourt, O.C., Former President, Métis Nation of Ontario, as an individual - so this is his opinion, not an official representation? And the sum total content I found is this: In many of our communities, towns and cities grew up around or engulfed them. The Metis community of Mattawa, there is a town there now. The same in North Bay and everywhere around the prairies. I don't see how that sources the added content. I'll look at the others and see if I missed anything. - CorbieVreccan 23:29, 12 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Here are all the mentions of Mattawa in the CBC source: Chartrand said some communities recognized by the MNO like the Mattawa Métis Council and the Barrie South-Simcoe Métis Council have no connection to the Métis Nation and don't have any Aboriginal rights under Section 35 of the Constitution granted to them through the courts. He said many of these communities have no ancestral or cultural connection to families from the Red River area and that they wouldn't pass the Powley test.
  • Please provide a page number for the other source. There are mentions of the area and First Nations, but what is the cite?
Taking both of these together, it's clear there's a history of First Nations communities in the area, but even in the second source it's not clear that any of the named First Nations communities and regions that had both Indigenous and settler population ever met the specific criteria to be considered a Métis culture. The second source mentions First Nations communities in the Mattawa region, but I'm not seeing consensus for it being specifically a Métis culture. - CorbieVreccan 23:49, 12 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There's clearly a so called Metis community there documented since the 80s be it official or not which I guess we'll talk about. Will come up with something this week. Moxy- 03:22, 13 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Section35rightsholder (talk) 03:46, 17 February 2023 (UTC) Ontario recognizes Mattawa as a historic Mètis community. https://news.ontario.ca/en/bulletin/45933/ontario-and-the-metis-nation-of-ontario-announce-identification-of-six-additional-historic-metis-communities[reply]

Section35rightsholder (talk) 03:59, 17 February 2023 (UTC) Ontario recognizes Mattawa as a Métis community, Ontario has posted on their GOVERNMENT website that Mattawa is a Métis website. It should be mentioned in the article. As for the Tony Belcourt comments. He was head of the Native Council of Canada and then the MNO his "Opinion" Carry as much weight as Chartrand. So one question is is the government of a province a credible source to Wikipedia?[reply]

Section35rightsholder (talk) 03:12, 20 February 2023 (UTC) What wording would you suggest CorbieVreecan to have Métis included in the article? Métis are legally recognized by Ontario and the MNO have an MOU with Canada. Métis from Mattawa are part of Bussiness Impact Agreements, are consulted by mining and forestry companies, and have harvesting rights for Moose, deer, fish, small game etc. Also Have rights for incidental lodgings which is Cabins on Crown land for hunting, fishing, trapping. Would "there is a section 35 rights bearing community located in Mattawa and surrounding areas"? A "Modern Mètis community recognized by Ontario and represented by the MNO in an MOU with Canada is present in Mattawa". These people have recognized rights(section 35) stemming from a community there. Any suggestions?[reply]
