Changes 29 October[edit]

Mary Rowlandson was not "the first American author". Anne Bradstreet precedes her. So I deleted that sentence. I also noted a number of conflicts in fact in the article with what is stated in my source: the Anthology of American Literature. Where there was a direct conflict, i.e. that a colonial militia was pursuing the Indians rather than the English Army, I made the change. I left the original article text intact as much as possible, and added a few more noteworthy facts. I hope with our combined efforts the article has been substantially improved. -Dan Quigley

According to Susan Faludi in a book review in the NYT 7 Sept. 2007, MR's book went through four printings and was America's 'first best-seller.' It would probably fit well into the first paragraph, the introduction. I have also heard that it went through four printings in a very short ammount of time, and yes, I think it is quite accurate to describe it was America's First "Bestseller." The apparent conflict of years may simply reflect contemporary practice. It was common in 17th century England to use "civil" or "legal" years, which start in March. The "New Year's Day" section of the article on the Julian Calender discusses this, and modern historians quite often use the form (for eg.) 1631/2 when dealing with dates early in the year during this period. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.149.50.218 (talk) 08:03, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
