Requested move[edit]

The result of the proposal was not moved. Primacy not established.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:39, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Mary Peters (athlete)Mary Peters – Olympic gold medallist who became a celebrity, more important than US politician, who should be hatnote. Relisted. Favonian (talk) 19:21, 2 August 2012 (UTC). PatGallacher (talk) 16:35, 26 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose - No clear primary topic. --MrBoire (talk) 15:43, 28 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - Not much more notable. Marcus Qwertyus 11:12, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Mooretwin (talk) 12:31, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose The contention that she became a celebrity doesn't seem supported by the article. Is it the bit about death threats from the IRA, in the 70s? George Bush's transportation secretary isn't exactly an A-lister either, but MrBoire and MQ are right—there's no clear primary topic here. --BDD (talk) 18:07, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose no clear primary topic -- the nominator hasn't provided any evidence establishing one. Hot Stop 04:49, 4 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Discussion closed - move opposed. --Gavin Lisburn (talk) 18:17, 6 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    • You can't both !vote and close, since the former makes you involved. Favonian (talk) 18:21, 6 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • It appears Gavin was trying to carry out a non-admin closure. His comment suggests he was trying to rule the request "opposed," rather than opposing it himself. --BDD (talk) 20:37, 6 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The 'move' section indicated the item could be removed after 7 days. As it is now over 7 days, I 'closed' it and indicated the concensus as 'opposed'. Why has it been reset again and allowed to run over the agreed time limit? --Gavin Lisburn (talk) 20:58, 6 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The discussion was relisted on August 2. Just let it run the extra week; there's no hurry. Favonian (talk) 21:04, 6 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think Favonian should remove his comment above linking me to voting. I have not voted at the present time. --Gavin Lisburn (talk) 21:40, 6 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Like at AfD, relisting a request resets the 7-day timer, so this request will be eligible for closure on Thursday. I think anyone reading this exchange can see that you were attempting a close, not a vote, and thus you can close the request at 19:21 UTC on Thursday if no one else has done so. Be sure to follow the procedure at Wikipedia:Non-admin closure.--BDD (talk) 21:55, 6 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

First coach[edit]

It is stated in the article, "The headmaster Donald Woodman and PE teacher Kenneth McClelland introduced her to athletics with Mr McClelland her first coach." Our memory (my wife Marian and I) as Portadown College alumni is that Kenneth McClelland had been a pupil there but not a teacher. Mary's career had already started to take off while she (and we) were at Portadown College. According to http://www.turtlebunbury.com/interviews/interviews_ireland/sporting%20legends/interviews_sports_mary_peters.html Kenneth McClelland was a PE trainer. We agree about the encourgaement given her by Donald Woodman. Mike Spathaky (talk) 22:39, 3 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

her style[edit]

Why is she Lady Mary? The usual reason is that her father is an earl, but there's no mention in the article. —Tamfang (talk) 14:38, 29 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Because she's a Lady of the Garter. It's the same format for dames except the Order of the Garter is unique in that its female members become ladies instead. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.141.61.29 (talk) 15:09, 11 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I wondered why she is listed as Lady Mary. She is Dame Mary even after being awarded the Garter. Should this not be changed?

No this should not be changed because as previously stated, she is a Lady of Garter, thus becoming Lady Mary Fagan. The order of the Garter is higher in precedence than the Order of the British Empire and the Order of St John, of which orders she is a dame. Thus, the title that she derives from the Order of the Garter - the UK's highest order of chivalry - is the title that she uses. That doesn't make her any less of a dame but she simply isn't styled as Dame Mary Fagan any longer. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.199.59.162 (talk) 12:04, 17 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Family[edit]

Did that person ever marry, or does that person have any children at all? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:4DD2:AFD6:0:ED4D:37BF:EDE9:804B (talk) 16:00, 29 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

"That person..." How rude! Mike Spathaky (talk) 11:20, 10 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Garter[edit]

Why? Some detail on the decision to give this award would be helpful. 2A00:23C7:E287:1900:C0A9:66F4:F02E:A536 (talk) 23:37, 15 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The Order of the Garter is the personal gift of the monarch. The Queen doesn't publish any reasons for why she chooses to bestow the Garter on people. However, the history of the Order shows that the Queen seems to favour people who have served as representatives of the Crown. Peters represented the Crown in her role as Lord Lieutenant of Belfast. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ff462 (talkcontribs) 11:15, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Mary Peters (athlete)Lady Mary PetersWP:NATURAL rather than parenthetical disambiguation. See related discussion at Talk:Elish Angiolini#Requested move 9 September 2023. estar8806 (talk) 02:41, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Support per nominator. Killuminator (talk) 03:27, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per WP:NCPEER. I also note that sources use "Dame Mary Peters", not "Lady Mary Peters". 162 etc. (talk) 17:08, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Those are older sources and title is a better way to disambiguate. Killuminator (talk) 17:16, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Per WP:NCPEER, "Titles of knighthood such as Sir and Dame are not normally included in the article title", and "Courtesy titles (...) should be included in the article title if the person is far better recognised with the title than without." I'll also note that neither you nor OP has presented any reliable sources to confirm the proposed name. 162 etc. (talk) 17:47, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Look it up yourself, it's already in use in the article with no particular need to source it. She's a Lady of the Thistle. Killuminator (talk) 17:50, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Support per nominator. Oxonwiki (talk) 17:37, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose Not sure that this is the natural disambiguator, most people who know of her will know her as an athlete, not everybody will know that she was later awarded a title. Also, is Dame or Lady the better title in this context? PatGallacher (talk) 15:09, 14 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Lady is the better title as it is above Dame in the order of precedence (she was appointed first a Dame and then a Lady of the Garter). Oxonwiki (talk) 18:55, 16 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
