Information Concerning Mary Doria Russell[edit]

I recently added the following information to the Mary Doria Russell page:

In writing A Thread of Grace Russell has written that her father, who served in the Marine Corps, helped her in researching military and weaponry which the author used to add depth to the novel's setting.[1]

Doria Russell stated in this interview that the involvement of her father and his Marine service lead her to write A Thread of Grace and added to the authenticity of the novel, something that many of her readers have lauded the book for. I would like to argue that this information, complete with a substantiated citation, be allowed to remain on the Mary Doria Russell page.

It should be noted the site, Loaded Questions, which has been linked to is a site in which I participate and conduct interviews. It should also be noted that Loaded Questions does not sell any products and and stands to make no monetary gain by ensuring that Wikipedia has the most current information about Mary Doria Russell, her career and her novels. The information which has been added to this page is not of a controversial nature and it is my belief that, despite the fact that I conducted the interview, it is information which must be included on the Mary Doria Russell page.

Military Childhood[edit]

Did she move around a lot growing up? That is not required to have a military influenced childhood, but I'm curious if she grew up that way.

Also it is a common omission, in many articles about children of American soldiers, to leave out ones mobile childhood. Although not all military kids did move around a lot. For the accuracy of the article it would be good to settle that issue, rather than to ignore it. She seems, for whatever reason to have a passion for international experience.

There are a lot of cultural layers in her books. I notice in a non-Wiki bio that she lived in Croatia as an adult--

There certainly appears to be a strong focus on international experience, and close attention to cultural detail, in her writing. Did she get this from her military parents? A less often discussed dimension of military careers can be international experience, due to overseas (peacetime) assignments, which can have lifelong effects on cultural interests or appreciation. Was this interest in things international (overseas cultures) passed on to Russell through stories told by her parents?

Some people develop international interests without any childhood impetus. Intellectual curiosity alone can suffice, along with an adventurous spirit (circling back, possibly to her Marine father, as far as adventurous spirit goes, and moving to Croatia as an adult certainly seems adventurous).

In families with military parents, the influence on the children (positive or negative) is often skipped right over by those who don't understand the range of such possible influences on a family. To put it another way-- in military families, military lifestyle and military cultural influences on childhood can vary from family to family, but are almost always there to some degree, and in some dimension. Are there any sources about any such formative influences for Russell, that later manifested in her writings?

Orphaned references in Mary Doria Russell[edit]

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Mary Doria Russell's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Fitting remarks (they fit each other!):

  • We say (no ref given), "she earned a Ph.D. in biological anthropology", and put her in Category:American paleoanthropologists.
  • John Clute [ref name=SFE] opens, "(1950- ) US paleo-anthropologist and author".[1]
  • The Croatia national library lists "New insights on the Krapina neandertals: 100 years since Gorjanović-Kramberge" (and Croatian-language items) for one Russell, Mary Doria. VIAF 305551056 --not (yet) linked to the novelist in other national libraries VIAF 35645591.

I suppose she has studied neanderthal remains in Krapina, Croatia. I added the Archaeology project banner at the top of this page (as at Category talk:American paleoanthropologists).
