Comments[edit]

The Location section for this entry is almost entirely incorrect. It is not in the Canyonlands Desert (in fact, I'm not even sure there is a such thing as the Canyonlands Desert). Although it is 45 or 50 air miles from Canyonlands National Park, the San Rafael Desert and the Burr Desert lie between MDRS and Canyonlands.

MDRS is 4.8 air miles from Hanksville. Over the road, it is 3.4 miles WEST of Hanksville on a paved road (UT-24), then 4 miles north along a dirt road to MDRS, for a total of 7.4 miles.

The exact coordinates of the station are as follows (in different coordinate formats):

DD MM.MMM: N 38° 24.385' W 110° 47.518' DD MM SS.SS: 38°24'23.39"N 110°47'30.68"W

I've never edited a Wikipedia entry and don't really care to, but I hate seeing incorrect info here. Maybe somebody else could first verify my info (though I'm sure it's correct) and then edit the page? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.111.123.135 (talkcontribs)

Hmm, I'm not saying your information is incorrect in the slightest. I'd be willing to add the information, but can we get some sources? McKay 21:56, 23 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I wish I could give you some hard sources to reference, but my sources are ExpertGPS (mapping software), the United States Geological Survey topographic maps of the area (1:24,000, 1:100,000, and 1:250,000), and my personal knowledge of the San Rafael Desert and surrounding area. The distance measurements were done by drawing a track over the roads in the aerial photo map in ExpertGPS. I actually got the coordinates from Google Earth, where the station is clearly visible in the satellite photos. As for the "Canyonlands Desert," well, I challenge anybody to find such a desert listed on any map.  :) The only references I can find on the Internet to the "Canyonlands Desert" are on Wikipedia and other similar encyclopedia-type sites that are probably derivatives of Wikipedia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.111.123.135 (talkcontribs)

Hmm, all that sounds like WP:OR that doesn't quite belong in the article. Do you think that someone else might have written things like this about these things?
I created the Canyonlands Desert location a long time ago, I don't remember my reasoning, but it *might* have been something more than just OR, I don't know. In any case, which region of utah do you think it belongs in ? McKay 19:16, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There are some interesting features there but absolutely no Mars Desert Research Station. Gingermint (talk) 02:41, 26 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Instructor comments[edit]

revise Exploring Mars heading

how are crews selected

how is this project funded?

Even though it has its own article, provide a couple of sentences here about the mars society

have any papers or reports issued from this place. What research has the research station produced?

list of references is too short and restricted. How about press reports. Wasnt there something in Popular Science?

What about educational functions for young people?

Good so far, but lets see more. Rudolph2007 (talk) 00:50, 14 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nice compact lead, striking and informative picture.

Headings are clear

Consider placing "Crews" after Research.

Students interested in participating in the project receive a $500 travel stipend from the Spaceward Bound Program run out of NASA Ames Research Center [3]. The Spaceward Bound Program aims to train the next generation of space explorers by having students and teachers participate in projects in extreme environments that can serve and simulations for the moon or Mars. By giving students and teachers the opportunity get involved in projects like MDRS, they gain first hand, scientific experience.

Crew members must wear a space suit when completing tasks outside the Hab to protect them from the harsh Martian environment. Complete suits include a helmet, jumpsuit, boots, gators, gloves, an air recycling pack, Platypus water pack, and a radio. Walkie-talkie radios are used to communicate with Hab-com

Hab and Hab-com not yet defined

Crews, tradionally consisting of six people, sign up for two week shifts during the winter months (it's too hot in the summer for pleasant simulation). Crews are not paid during their time at the station, but do get valuable experience.

The Commander is ultimately responsible for the entire crew and operations. Their other responsibilities include maintaining a structures stream of information from the crew to Mission Support, establishing the agenda for each sol (EVAs, maintainance, cooking, cleaning, etc.) and holding morning and evening meetings with all crew members.

Campus section contains valuable information. It's possible that this is primary research, which in this case is necessary, but if possible, cite some sources.

Popular Science link doesnt work; if necessary use reference to hard copy

Impressive work so far. This article will be helpful to anyone interested in the subject. You can make it more accessible by linking to more wikipedia categories. see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Categorization

Coordinate error[edit]

{{geodata-check}} The coordinates need the following fixes: The UTM zone is 12, NOT 6! 66.82.162.16 (talk) 17:24, 26 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No UTM coordinates appear within the article. Clicking on the listed lat-lon coordinates goes to GeoHack, which shows a set of UTM coordinates in zone 12. BrainMarble (talk) 01:51, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If you plug those coordinates into Google Maps you see part of a desolate freeway. If you spend some time looking around in the area you find some very interesting geological features... but no Mars Desert Research Station. Gingermint (talk) 02:38, 26 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
