NHRP[edit]

  • I see references to this shopping centre being on the National Register of Historic Places, but am having trouble finding its entry there. Can anyone help?--Milowent (talk) 22:34, 9 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • I did a little more digging today, and searched the old NHRP database at http://www.nr.nps.gov/ - There is no listing there for Market Square! Also, National_Register_of_Historic_Places_listings_in_Lake_County,_Illinois doesn't have it either (or even the City of Lake Forest's listings [1]). The Market Square website claims[2] it was listed in 1979, as do other sources such as Malling of America (first published in 1985), but the original source is unclear. Encyclopedia of Chicago says it was 1978. The Chicago papers have also printed[3][4][5][6][7][8] that the center is listed. However, there is a NHRP listing for the "Lake Forest Historic District" (added 1978-01-26 - District - #78001161), which is described as "roughly bounded by Western, Westleigh, Lake Michigan, and N city limits, Lake Forest". Market Square lies on the west side of Western Ave, so Market Square may well be in that district. See Google Map location, center map. This June 2009 blogpost says the shopping center was in the district (but mistakenly says it was recognized in 1976 instead of 1978.) I am guessing that the claim that Market Square was "America's first planned shopping center" is in the NHRP materials for the historic district somewhere, but its simply not true that Market Square individually is listed on the NRHP. Just another fascinating example of the jockeying and bold claims and fact bending done by all of the earliest shopping centers. The new NHRP database[9] doesn't seem to be working well yet, and doesn't have the source materials for this listing up. When it does, it will be interesting to see what it says.--Milowent (talk) 16:51, 5 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
