MARK WILSON:
Mark Wilson (born August 1966) is a New Zealand businessman and Group Chief Executive of Aviva plc.

EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION:

Wilson was born in Rotura, New Zealand, and attended the University of Waikato on an economics scholarship where he earned his Bachelor of Management Studies degree. (1)

CAREER:

Wilson has over 25 years of operational and executive experience in the insurance industry.

Prior to joining Aviva, Wilson was Chief Executive Officer and President of AIA Group (insurance), based in Hong Kong. He repositioned AIA, creating a leading pan-Asian insurance company; Wilson improved AIA’s market valuation, successfully navigated the company through the global management crisis and prepared it for IPO.

He was previously Chief Executive Officer of AXA China and Chief Executive Officer of AXA South East Asia (insurance). He also held a number of senior management positions at National Mutual (insurance) in New Zealand, where he progressed through many of the major business functions, gaining a deep and broad knowledge of the business (2).

• Aviva

At Aviva, Wilson initiated and is leading a turnaround of the FTSE100 insurer (3). He has set out an investment thesis of cash flow plus growth, and a business strategy which builds on Aviva’s ability to offer customers life, general and health insurance and asset management, driving a ‘digital first’ approach across all distribution channels and focusing on markets in which Aviva has scale and competitive advantage (4), (5).

In his first year, Wilson strengthened the management team and led a programme to reinvigorate Aviva’s culture, including an emphasis on the importance of creating legacy. Wilson has said that he sees Aviva as “an ethically, environmentally and socially responsible insurer” (6). Aviva is one of the top global companies listed in the FTSE4Good Index (7) and is the only UK insurance company within the UN Global Compact 100 stock index (8).

Wilson has led consumer campaigns on consumer issues such as reform of the UK motor insurance market; the need to reduce the impact on customers of insurance fraud and flooding; and the need for government and financial services companies to work together to reduce the ‘savings gap’. Wilson has also spoken regularly on how capital markets can best support sustainable economic growth (9).

Feedback[edit]

If you could give me some feedback we’d be most grateful. Thanks and have a lovely weekend --HayleySandford (talk) 18:55, 30 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • I'm not sure we should be including any of this. These are all articles that Wilson has written himself. Does writing an article for a newspaper really constitute "campaigning"? And how can you campaign on "celebrating British business"? It all sounds like PR spin to me. And as for the photo, we'd have to cut the UN logo to keep it inline with WP:NPOV. Edwardx (talk) 19:42, 30 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • I agree, I'm afraid. A Daily Mail article written by Wilson is not an independent source. Dormskirk (talk) 22:00, 30 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Mark Wilson: Personal Life[edit]

Hello,

I work in the communications team at Aviva and would like to suggest an amend to Mark Wilson's profile please.

Mark Wilson has recently divorced from his wife. Please can you amend the Personal Life section to say "He is divorced and has three children". Please also remove the Spouses section in his biography on the right hand side.

I'm afraid I do not have any references to add to support this.

Many thanks

HayleyHayleySandford (talk) 09:42, 5 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hayley - Sorry but we would really need a reference to support this, and without it, per WP:BLP any such comment would have to be remove immediately. Dormskirk (talk) 20:56, 5 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Update[edit]

Per ticket:2017060810010799 the section about his personal life is no longer current. A challenge is the lack of a published reliable source supporting the change in status. It did find a mention in LinkedIn but I don't think we count that as a reliable source. Given the situation, and the fact that marital status is hardly central to the article I've made the decision to remove the section. My suggestion is if an editor feels the need to include this personal information they wait a bit until the current status is mentioned in a reliable source.--S Philbrick(Talk) 15:44, 16 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds sensible to me. Dormskirk (talk) 15:58, 16 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Careers section[edit]

Hello,

I work in Aviva's Communications team and would like to suggest some amendments to Mark Wilson's Wikipedia profile.

There have been a few recent business developments that we'd like to reference and also add in some context about Mark's history of turning companies around.

Please can we remove this wording:

Wilson has written about various issues including putting the brakes on compensation culture,[1] tackling Britain's retirement savings inertia[2] and ensuring everyone plays their part to keep the flood threat at bay.[3]

And create a new heading called 'Business Experience' and add in the following text:

Business experience[edit]

Wilson was credited with steering AIA through the financial crisis – a period that saw parent company [[1]] bailed out by the US government [4]. He prepared AIA for its flotation on the stock market in Hong Kong in 2010, increasing the company’s value to $36bn at the time of listing [5]. He has continued his turnaround work at Aviva, which had run into difficulty at the point of his arrival. Wilson refocused its life and general insurance businesses [6] and bolstered its balance sheet [7]. Under Wilson’s leadership, Moody’s upgraded Aviva Plc's senior unsecured debt rating to A2 from A3 and Aviva Plc's commercial paper rating to P-1 from P-2 [8]. Having turned around Aviva’s performance, he is now looking to transform Aviva into a fintech firm [9]. Opening ‘Digital Garages’[10], setting up a new insurance digital business in Hong Kong with Tencent and Hillhouse Capital[11], the MyAviva digital hub and Aviva’s investment in its own digital transformation are all indicators of Wilson’s effectiveness in achieving this aim[12].

He is also a member of the EAT Foundation Advisory Board, which he joined in June 2017. The Foundation’s ambition is to reform the global food system so that it is sustainable and supports a growing global population with healthy food from a healthy planet [7].
