Thought id provide some input.

  • How are we defining a marine weather forecast? - if its as loose as a forecast over seas or is it specifically defined as issuing a marine forecast product
    • Either way on the above we need to think about including some more examples within "Responsible organizations" eg: All of the main TC warning services - whether it be the RSMC itself or just specifically the parent company (NOAA, JMA, IMD, MF, BoM, FMS, Metservice).
  • Link Robert Fitzroy
  • This remained the United Kingdom's Met Office primary responsibility for some time afterwards. - This is kind of false as all weather services lapsed from Fitzroy's death until 1874.
  • In the American example when did they start issuing forecasts? - also was this just for the Atlantic or the Pacific as well?

Thats it for now.Jason Rees (talk) 20:54, 10 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The second detail was done a little while ago. As for the first, I'm still trying to deal with that. So far, I'm thinking generally, which could allow for the inclusion of weather lore such as "red sky in the morning, sailors take warning." The article could use more older information about the early days, pre-government organizational forecasting. The Southern Hemisphere hasn't been addressed yet...need to find the relevant WMO document. In general, the TC RSMCs are likely the centers for marine forecasts...but I'd like to make sure of that. As for the third, that's how the UK Met Office reference stated the case. If there was a lapse in service, we need another reference to state such. I added a tidbit last night about when the civilian organization started issuing marine forecasts for the North Atlantic and North Pacific (see history). As for the Navy, I have no real idea. It should have started during WWII, but that's just a guess. Thegreatdr (talk) 22:14, 10 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Theres a map here which shows which country has the marine responsibility, though there are some variations to that, with RSMC Nadi taking marine responsibility for the area between [0 and 25S, 160E - 120W], while as you well know the USA area is split between TAFB and OPC. I believe the information on the gap in service is referenced decently in the Fitzroy article but if its not ill either look for a source or email the guy who conducted a talk i went to last year on the UKMO's history.Jason Rees (talk) 23:37, 10 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I just found an NWS source mentioning that Honolulu and NHC have responsibilities south of the equator. The NHC portion more or less matches the map. Honolulu claims what you mention is the Nadi area for marine forecasting. We'll definitely need more sourcing, and if multiple entities claim certain regions, it will have to be reconciled in the text. Thegreatdr (talk) 23:14, 12 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
