this shouldnt be up for deletion at all.... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 220.245.126.165 (talk) 08:04, 11 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I would agree, appears to be an importand event with no exisitng parent topic that would cover this event ! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.254.146.52 (talk) 15:53, 11 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Compared to other disasters, this appears minor. The partially "submerged car," for example appears to have the wheels standing in 15 cm of water--most in the world would not consider this catastrophic, as the automobile is probably not considered to be damaged, and most likely, is completely driveable. But then again, it is a significant departure from normal weather patterns--so show us some charts, please.75.34.92.36 (talk) 04:30, 12 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Validity of Entry and Content[edit]

I think a significant aspect of this event was the hail up to 10 cm.

A good picture of solid hail balls compared with a tennis ball is at http://www.abc.net.au/news/photos/#num=4&id=2840506. This is a public submitted photo (Gary), to which I think the ABC (Australian Public Broadcaster) has the rights to. Someone more experienced may need to check.

Australian Bureau of Meteorology Service comments this was a storm event, a supercell, of type not seen in Melbourne for last 10 to 20 years. (I can not find confirming reference, was talk back ABC radio.) On the other hand, talking with one Melbourne resident, they do recall similar severity of storms 20 years ago.

More broadly, I think this is a significant event, even of on a national rather than international level. Unusal or exceptional weather events are significant to document in my view as part of the Wikipedia database of knowledge, including significant events.

Map[edit]

We need a map of the storms, their paths, their origins, etc, to properly illustrate the events. Nick carson (talk) 06:52, 13 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Westfield Doncaster Shopping Town fire, March 6, 2010[edit]

There was a fire at Doncaster Westfield Shopping Town (or was it Westfield Doncaster?), in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, that night, and I was wondering if it was related to the hailstorm that day in the Melbourne area (see Youtube video and related article; headline claims the storm led to the blaze, but the article doesn't back that claim up). — Rickyrab. Another article claims the fire was caused by an "electrical fault" (but doesn't mention what the fault was). — Rickyrab. Yada yada yada 00:31, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
After the incident, attention was pointed to an alleged goof in evacuating people from the movie theater that the fire affected. Parking was apparently at a deck, of the pay-before-leaving variety, and staff failed to press the button to raise the exit gates automatically. This led to traffic jams at the exit gates as people had to leave in the manner they normally would (presumably by inserting their ticket, either free within 3 or 4 hours or paid for otherwise, to raise the gate). The fire was "some distance away", so police and mall security felt there was no need to automatically raise the gates. — Rickyrab. Yada yada yada 00:50, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Were all the decent photographs of the weather event washed away? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 115.187.232.138 (talk) 16:58, 3 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
