Marcelo Vieira da Silva JúniorMarcelo Vieira — As his son called Enzo Alves Vieira, the primary surname of Marcelo is Vieira (in although Silva was also part of the surname from his mother, likely) Also, Marcelo commonly refer as just Marcelo, or more specify Marcelo Vieira on media . Matthew_hk tc 01:34, 12 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • According to the Brazilian naming conventions, the "Júnior" in his name indicates that he was the first male child of Marcelo Vieira da Silva. So Vieira comes from Júnior's father's mother, and da Silva from Júnior's father's father. But in Brazil abbreviations as the one you suggest are often used, especially because 'da Silva' is an extremely common surname and "Marcelo da Silva" would have lots of homonyms. (See for instance Ayrton Senna, who was also a da Silva).
In recent years the Brazilian Civil law has been modernized, and now children may receive any/all of the parents' surnames, in any order, which explains why his son Enzo bears the surname Alves Vieira instead of the until recently mandatory Alves da Silva. --capmo 02:54, 12 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

not enough information[edit]

"On 15 May 2011, Marcelo's Facebook page was shut after he posted a picture supporting Palestinian Intifada."

Even though this is factually correct, it leaves too many questions unanswered and beds for speculations. We don't know why his account was closed, and if the posting of the picture and "supporting Palestinian Intifada" had anything to do with it, so it might be good to mention this too.
The picture was of a young man whose face is covered with a black and white keffiyeh - the national symbol of Palestine - seemingly in action of wielding a slingshot with a stone in it. There is nothing in the picture to establish the nationality of the man or his whereabouts, but together with Marcelo's comment "My heart with Palestinian now as they fighting with Israel", it can be understood to be a photo of a Palestinian man. People have mentioned reporting it because it depicts "graphic violence", "attacks individuals or groups" or "hate symbol", and even though I can understand that reasoning, I don't agree with it.

Height[edit]

Just wondering if User:Kante4 wouldn't mind explaining this edit in which he removed from the article altogether Marcelo's FIFA profile which gives his height as 174 cm and replaced it with a source giving his height as 1,74 m.--Gibson Flying V (talk) 21:05, 17 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The other sources i saw list him as m.cm which common in Europe and also other party. I don't get why you want to change that, look at other articles. Not done anywhere else. Why not bring it to WP:FOOTY to get more input? Kante4 (talk) 21:12, 17 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Because This is the English Wikipedia and the change is a positive one grounded in policy (which I'm surprised even needs to be pointed out to you). Metres for expressing human height are an oddity in the English speaking world. If I went to the German Wikipedia to try and change it you'd have the ghost of a point. But until then you don't. Now, how about putting it back to the way it was? You're welcome to do the same at other articles too.--Gibson Flying V (talk) 21:34, 17 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You are really good in talking cocky, wow... How about i stay with what i said. But talking and discussing with you seems not possible in a normal manner, sadly. So, i will save my time... And in no way i do it on other articles. Kante4 (talk) 21:38, 17 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Oh dear. Well I'm going to fix it as the encyclopedia's quality is my main concern, and in the meantime perhaps you could have a read of Wikipedia:Arguments to avoid on discussion pages.--Gibson Flying V (talk) 21:48, 17 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No, thanks. I will discuss whatever and whenever i want. Now do "your" things and ok. Nothing more to add here. Kante4 (talk) 04:07, 18 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Kante4 has no right. 174 cm is fine and if written in metres it should be 1.74 m NOT 1,74 m.Correctron (talk) 23:38, 25 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Again, the FIFA.com source has been removed from the article altogether by User:Kante4, with the edit summary "discussed". Please explain yourself.--Gibson Flying V (talk) 23:43, 6 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sure. It's been discussed at WPFOOTY and the Admin board. It's been said that "m" would be used across football articles. You are the ONLY one against it. I have no provlem adding the FIFA.com source to the "birth date" parameter. You changed "m" to your preferred "cm" before. You may want to accept that "m" is preferred around here at some point now... Kante4 (talk) 10:32, 7 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Position[edit]

The introduction of this article clearly states that Marcelo can play as a winger. The "Real Madrid" section of the article cleary states that Marcelo played as a winger under Juande Ramos and Manuel Pellegrini. Please stop removing "winger" from the infobox without first providing valid reasons for doing so.--Alza08 (talk) 08:29, 14 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, but wikipedia is not a reliable source. And i follow RM for quite some time and he always plays as a left back the last few years. So i would leave it as it is, a left back player. Kante4 (talk) 11:19, 14 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Marcelo acts 99.9999999% of the games as a left back. Games sometimes as winger, but for years only acts as the left side. In the introduction explains that occasionally he is can act as winger, so it is not necessary to put the infobox. Gringoladomenega (talk) 14 October 2014 (UTC)
Same with Coentrao, plays as a left back nowadays and for years. Had played as winger and a central midfielder, but just at times. Can be mentioned in both articles, but not in the infobox. Kante4 (talk) 12:08, 14 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Statistics[edit]

Hi. I updated Marcerlo Statistics, and i don't find many information about his two season on Fluminense. The data added here in the article is from National Football Teams], and is the same in Worldfootball, Soccerway added one more match on 2006 season. According Fluzao, Marcelo played 40 matches for Flu, no details, and the last one is Ogol, with 49 matches in his 2 seasons.Pincheira22 (talk) 18:23, 1 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
