The Cakkavatti Sutta[edit]

Untitled[edit]

In the Chakravartin sutra it is said, according to translation by Thanissaro Bhikkhu:

from Cakkavatti Sutta [2]

  1. ^ Translator's note:4. This is the refrain repeated with each stage in the account of how human life will improve in the aftermath of the sword-interval. Here, "merit" seems to have the meaning it has in Iti 22: "Don't be afraid of acts of merit." This is another way of saying what is blissful, desirable, pleasing, endearing, charming — i.e., acts of merit."
  2. ^ Cakkavatti Sutta The Wheel-turning Emperor (excerpt) Translated from the Pali by Thanissaro Bhikkhu

Meaning of "mara"?[edit]

Does anyone know the etymology of the word "mara"? Does it have a meaning besides naming the devil figure of Buddhism? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.15.114.27 (talk) 14:54, 10 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Three Daughters[edit]

During the fifth week, while meditating under a banyan tree, three most charming girls called Tanha, Rati and Raga came to disturb his meditation. They danced in a most seductive and charming manner and did everything to tempt the Buddha to watch their dance. Yet he continued to meditate unperturbed, and soon they tired and left him alone.

Death[edit]

Buddhism calls this aspect Mara and I feel its real meaning is lost in this article. Mara is Ego, and also death. From an Enlightened or Christ-mind perspective, when an individual creates an Ego it is the death of the real "I" or self and the birth of a personality (subject/object), therefore death is 'correct' but there is more. When we refer to ourselves as object (think to ourselves about ourselves), we create ourselves from memory (Ego). This self is subject to change based on these contents, but my own perspective is individual based on my individual knowledge, therefore my life my own illusion. That is the spiritual death described by 'all' faiths.109.149.217.4 (talk) 19:34, 25 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Mara is not ego and Buddhism has nothing to do with "Christ-mind". Talk pages are not a forum for original thought. Dharmalion76 (talk) 13:26, 26 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

– The mythological demon is the primary topic with significantly more pageviews than other topics. While the film Mara (film) also has a high amount of pageviews, it is clearly named after the mythological demon, which is further evidence that the demon is the primary topic.
