This entry deserves a mention of some critical scholarship, at the very least Lionel Trilling's brilliant essay. How about Edward Said's critique of the Antigua plantation?

In a few respects I'd correct the plot summary.

• Fanny's own family was poor in the sense that they only had two household servants. I'd like to be that sort of poor.
• Sir Thomas Bertram leaves for Antigua to recoup from Tom's gambling debts.
• Sir Thomas helps Fanny's brother Frank's career more than Mr. Crawford does.
• Fanny becomes tutor and mentor to a younger sister while she is in Portsmouth.
• Julia elopes with a minor character.
• Maria cannot elope with Mr. Crawford. She is already married. She runs away to France with Mr. Crawford. Her husband divorces her. Her lover dumps her. The scandal reaches the newspapers. Maria's relatives finally exile her to a rural cottage with Mrs. Norris.
