Two Mills and Norristown[edit]

I'm having trouble finding a reliable resource that documents the relationship between the fictional Two Mills and Spinelli's childhood town, Norristown, PA.This stuff stinks. As it stands, what's stated in the article is original research, which is against Wiki policy. Can anyone help me on this? Maniacmagee (talk) 23:09, 25 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Edit: I found a reference in Winning Authors: Profiles of the Newbery Medalists. It states that "Jerry [Spinelli] was born in Norristown, Pennsylvania. He lived in a brick row house in a neighborhood that later became a model for Two Mills, the town in Maniac Magee." Norristown has a trolley line that enters the town over a bridge across the Schuylkill River. I believe that it was referred to in the book as the P&W, which was the original name of the trolley line (Philadelphia and Western). The Elmwood Park Zoo in Norristown is the only zoo that appeared with that name in Google. That zoo also has a large field containing bison with a covered shed. Would a statement that "Norristown, where Jerry Spinelli was born, has many similarities to the fictional town of Two Mills" be acceptable. I believe that Norristown also used to have two steel mills, although I can find the names of the companies at this time. Finally, some of the supporters of the Elmwood Park Zoo because they feel that it is referring to Norristown and they don't like the reminder of past racism. 18:20, 11 July 2022 (UTC) Crazyengineer (talk) 18:20, 11 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Would you consider https://patch.com/pennsylvania/norristown/norristown-native-jerry-spinelli-s-maniac-magee-comes978ff62718 as a good source. They apparently had Jerry Spinelli in Elmwood Park answering questions about the book. Alan Wood Steel had facilities in Bridgeport. (The trolley accident in the book occurred on a bridge crossing the Schuylkill from Bridgeport to Norristown. Sorry it has taken me so long to get to this. I really am a cad and a bounder.

I think you need more sources. Specifically for the characters section. And a themes section can be added. Juvenile fiction is rarely included in academic research unless it's something like Winnie the Pooh, Alice in Wonderland, or To Kill a Mockingbird. You included the only mention of the book in the MLA database. I think, though, that it might be safe to add cites from teaching materials in places since the book is most widely utilized as a teaching tool and the most academic discourse on the book will be from teachers. Of course you should avoid vocabulary lessons and fill-in-the-blank stuff, but some of those teaching guides will discuss characters and themes. I used to use them with my students.
