Malton, I grew up in Malton. in the "cedar" condo on Derry road. Every day I walked home from public school, down crabtree, to laddie cres, and then through the catwalk to the back of the Maple Building. There was this weird pool on Laddie cres. that was shaped like a coffin.. who would make a coffin shaped pool?

  • I was not allowed to go over to play at the willow building..... just to go to the tuck shop there. It is a very different place now from where I grew up in the 70's. I spent many a morning over at the westwood arena, and worked my firt Job at the McDonalds right across the road. Both my Mom and my Dad were immigrants, but considered themselves Maltonians... we thought we would be there forever But in the 80's we moved on. Trips to Wildwood park as a child were like trips to heaven, the creek was so clean and high at that time we could swing from ropes and jump right in. Not so now. It seems the idilyc place that was malton is now gone forever, rolled over by stripmalls and gang wars. I remember running our dog down by the creek, catching crayfish, swimming in the pool on lazy hot summer days. no worries and no cares. Most of my generation moved away from malton eventually, unable to reconcile the changes, the progress. I miss you old Malton. you were a great place to grow up.

Other Malton memories[edit]

I grew up in Malton, too, and remember it fondly as a quiet little place where there really wasn't enough to do to get into much trouble. I lived in the condo townhouses at 3525 Brandon Gate Drive (on the east side of Goreway and just south of an east-west line of the CN railway) before our family moved to a semi-detached elsewhere in the neighbourhood, then away from Malton altogether in 1989. One of my earliest memories of Malton was being scolded by Mom for straying too close to the railway tracks that ran along the north side of our townhouse development, where some brilliant mind had sited our nearest playground.

When we first moved to Malton in 1974, the place felt like it was at the ends of the earth. At the time, there was no Highway 427 to Malton, no western extension of Finch Avenue. Arriving in Malton then involved plucking one's way up a dark, two-lane, north/south-running backroad called Indian Line (a possible reference to part of the old trail used by the Wendat First Nation to travel between Lakes Ontario and Huron), much loved by dirt-bikers who rode the dusty embankments along the east side of the road. Riding a bike or driving outside the "borders" of the community invariably took you to farmland, grassy fields, conservation areas, and various sleepy industrial areas.

As a child, I regularly haunted the public library (now much renovated!) and explored just about every street in Malton on my two-wheeler. I can remember doing my Christmas shopping at the local Westwood Mall, where I eventually worked part-time as a cashier at a Dollar Bill's dollar store, long gone I imagine. Stores like Towers, Food City and Miracle Mart -- also no more! -- were the anchors at this local mall. When the Woodbine Centre shopping mall opened in the mid-1980s in Rexdale, just a short bus ride across the 427, it became a kid magnet: until then, one couldn't easily get to movie theatres or chain clothing stores without a car. Since then, the city really seems to have caught up to Malton with a vengeance, and the suburban neighbourhood I grew up in has now grown up too.

Dollar Bills is now a Payless Shoes. Towers was Zellers for awhile, but that closed down about 12 years ago. Westwood Mall is a complete flop IMO. The only other mall as bad I have been to is Gerrard Sq., but at least Gerrard Sq. seems like they are trying to improve it. Westwood on the other hand, one of the worst Malls with poor selection, and at least 25% of space that is either empty or constantly in transition.
As far as crime goes in Malton, I've walked all hours up and down Goreway and through the catwalks, and the only people who have ever harassed me are the roid rage cops. --Mista-X (talk) 13:32, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Holy smokes![edit]

Geez, could we make Malton look any more like a hick town? Holy crap! The MickyD's as seen from a salt-encrusted asphalt nightmare and a low-res picture of a tenement we warn our kids they'll end up in if they don't try harder at school? Well at least the latter managed to get a nicely framed trash can, which seems kinda cosmically appropriate. Is that the best we can do? Surely someone has some better pictures than this?! Come on, someone, somewhere, has to have an image of the old Avro plants before they took them down? Hey, even the Pepsico/7up buildings across the street would be an improvement. History needs cleanup, repetition[edit]

History section needs cleanup... Looks like the sentence at the end about the Avro arrow is just repetition of what is already in the section, as if someone added it without really reading the section first.CrocodilesAreForWimps (talk) 17:00, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

THIS ARTICLE IS LOW QUALITY!!![edit]

The notable people from Malton contains people who should not be there. Charles Allen never won an Olympic Gold Medal, however, Carlton Chambers who did is not included. The history is repititious.
