From the Advertiser (Adelaide, SA : 1889 - 1931), Saturday 23 October 1909:

"A large Parliamentary party left Ade- laide by motor cars at 10 o'clock on Friday for the purpose of inspecting the Mallala country that would be affeoted by the pro- posed narrow gauge railway extension from Balaklava to Adelaide. The trip was made at the request and invitation of the Mal- lala railway committee, and the following made the journey:-The Commissioner of Public Works (Hon. L. O'Loughlin), Chief Secretary (Hon. J. G. Bice), Commissioner of Crown Lands (Hon. E. H. Coombe), the Hons. E. Lucas, A. von Doussa, F. S. Wallis, and T. Pascoe, M.'sL.C, Hon. R. Butler, and Messrs. J. Verran, P. T. Heg- gaton, C. Vaughan, W. J. Blacker, S. ii. Rudall, G. Dankel, T. Crush, K. W. Dun- can, T. H. Smeaton, J Travers, and E. H. Warren, M/sP.

The legislators had a quick run through Virginnia to Two Wells, which was reached at about 11.30 a.m. Some fine crops were seen on the way. At Two Wells the party were met by Messrs. F. M. Wor- den, T. Irish, P. J. Murphy (secretary), and H. B. Moody (members of the Mallala railway committee), and also by Mr. W. B. Cowan, the Two Wells representative of that body. During a brief stay there the members inspected the local school children,'who were drawn up in front of the school building. The Commissioner of Public Works, on behalf of the Minister of Education (Hon. A. H. Peake), who was unable to be present, spoke a few words to the scholars, and requested the headmaster (Mr. T. V. Hartnett) to grant them a half holiday. This intimation was received with cheers from the children.

Arrival at Mallala.

The remaining twelve miles of the jour- ney to Mallala were quickly covered, and at 12.15 the pilot car passed under the banner of welcome, which was stretched across the main street of that town. An- other banner bearing the words "Narrow gauge railway extension" showed that the question of railway communication with Adelaide had entered largely into the life of the people in that district. A feature of the welcome was the demonstration made by the local school children, under the headmaster (Mr. T. Nevin). Each child carried a miniature Union Jack, and the vigorously waving flags made a pretty picture as the nine big motor cars swept through their lines. After the schcol chil- dren had sung the National Anthem and "The Song of Australia" the Commissioner of Public Works delivered a short addres , and in honor of the visit requested that the children should be given a half holiday. Three cheers were given for the members, and at the coll of Mr. Nevin there were three cheers "for the conversion of the Commissioner of Public Works to the narrow gauge extension."

This short ceremony over, the visitors drove to "Buckfastleigh," Mr. T. Irish's well-appointed homestead, a mile and a half distant from the township. On arri- val there they were received by Mrs. Irish and were entertained at luncheon, which was laid in the large dining-'halL Upwards of 30 guests sat down.

The Commissioner of Public Works, on behalf of the members, thanked Mr. and Mrs. Irish for the hospitable manner in which they had been received. He warmly complimented Mrs. Irish and her daughters on tue excellence of the luncheon, which, he said, was worthy of the best houses in Ade- laide. He had much pleasure in proposing continued prosperity to Mr. and Mrs. Irish and family. The toast was honored en- thusiastically.' Afterwards the legislators made a visit of inspection of the homestead and found that the secret of success lay in the general excellence of the appointments and thorough farming methods." --NearEMPTiness (talk) 16:18, 8 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
