Properties[edit]

What is the reliable source for this: MgS reacts with water to give hydrogen sulfide and magnesium hydroxide? This is parroted in many other wikipedias (German, Català, Japanese - none with sources either) Albmont (talk) 16:20, 26 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, found the source - Wiberg and Holleman. The hydrolytic instability of MgS is consistent with the nonexistence of MgS as a mineral, usually a pretty reliable guide.--Smokefoot (talk) 03:19, 29 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Textbooks disagree on it, if it is soluble in water or not :) Yet from personal experience, it is soluble, and does not readily decompose :) 37.60.16.36 (talk) 02:16, 5 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Textbooks list it as soluble because it 'disappears' in water it just dissolves leaving soluble magnesium hydroxide.Keres🌕Luna edits! 17:00, 26 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
