Roc-A-Fella Records[edit]

Honestly I think that Roc-A-Fella shouldn't be counted as an active label on new articles because the label went defunct years ago. Stylization[edit]

Jay-Z's official website does use the ellipsis; where does it not? Although, I do agree to keep an eye on the sources in the next few days to see whether it should be changed back. Edit request on 4 July 2013[edit]

Please change "BBC" contains a sample of "Feel So Good" by Mase to "BBC" lyrically samples "Feel So Good" by Mase because there is no instrumental sample included in BBC, just a revised lyrical line from "Feel So Good" in the first line of the second verse of BBC. (Also, other songs from the Magna Carta album which only include lyrical samples are denoted, so for consistency as well I am requesting this change) - in addition, the other samples which are noted as lyrically sampling another song say "xxx lyrically samples of..."; these should be changed to the syntax in my edit, removing the "of", as this is not correct English. "Positive" reception[edit]

The album's actually receiving pretty weak reviews from high profile sites (pitchfork, slant, spin, guardian) and the metacritic score is pretty low too, are we sure this is "positive" reception? seems like it should be "mixed" instead. 66.31.47.232 (talk) 19:12, 8 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Def Jam?[edit]

I'm aware that various perfectly reliable sources state that the album was released on Virgin EMI in the United Kingdom. However, having actually received a copy of the album for my birthday (lucky me!) the sticker on the back of the album and the booklet clearly state that the album was "manufactured by The Island Def Jam Music Group", with no mention of Virgin EMI on the packaging. I noticed that too as it also says that on the back of US version of the album. However, it seems the album was "manufactured by Island Def Jam" not released by the label. Does the UK version also include the Roc-A-Fella and Roc Nation logos on the back? If it does then those labels need to be added to the release history entry. Well, I believe Def Jam did not release the album, and it is a possibility The Independent lifted the label info from either Amazon (not always a reliable source) or us. There is no mention of Universal anywhere on the packaging: the full label information, on both the sticker and the back, says "Marketed by Roc Nation LLC. Manufactured by The Island Def Jam Music Group." There are, as stated, Roc-A-Fella and Roc Nation stickers on the back, but that's the only label information at all. For comparison, I looked at the information on the packaging for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, an album we have listed on here as being released via Def Jam: it reads "2010 Roc-A-Fella Records, LLC. Manufactured and Marketed by The Island Def Jam Music Group, a division of UMG Recordings, Inc". The common word is "manufactured": seeing as one of a major label's roles is to actually physically make the albums and send the album out to retailers (i.e. a "distributor", another word sometimes used here to describe the major label behind the album) then why could we not say that Def Jam distributed the album, if only in the United Kingdom? I have both of those CDs. For MCHG comparison the US version also has the "manufactured by Island Def Jam" but it also says "distributed by Universal Music Distribution" or something to that nature on the back cover. I also know that MBDTF has Def Jam mentioned in the album liner notes. I do not think Def Jam physically distributed MCHG as it is well known Universal distributed it in the US and many other countrys so I am unsure why the UK would be any different. Maybe Def Jam physically made the CD and the casing and such? That is what it seems to be. STATic message me! 18:15, 20 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Magna Carta... Holy Grail → Magna Carta Holy Grail – Where are we getting these ellipses? My first thought was some sort of official name or stylization, but I don't see them on the album's official site. I see mixed usage from Rolling Stone and the ellipses on iTunes, but most reliable sources seem to be omitting them, including Time, Billboard, Pitchfork, EW, the LA Times, NY Daily News, and the NY Times. And from a quick scan of the sources on the page, it looks like only the chart listings are using the ellipses form (though again, not Billboard). Oppose' per 2Flows' explanation - this is the official stylization that Jay Z chose (and which iTunes uses); the reason I believe many of the reviews omit it is because this stylization was only revealed shortly before the release (around 24 hours before), so I guess many publications assumed it was written how it was announced.
