Active in debate over WI sugar tariffs[edit]

McGregor Laird wrote an 1844 piece (book or pamphlet) entitled "The effect of an alteration in the sugar duties on the condition of the people of England and the Negro race considered", published by E Wilson, Royal Exchange. In 1846 Britain passed the Sugar Duties Act, eliminating the favorable tariff on West Indies sugar and shifting the trade in favor of India, which was thought to be good because India didn't have formal slavery (though the treatment of workers was awful). It seems that Laird's contribution to this debate would be worth following up. There's a LOC copy of the book, which I haven't yet read. Polysinger (talk) 17:47, 24 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
