Don't get this[edit]

It says in the article that Emily Dickinson "is said to have had to witness audibly the ongoing affair, and to have been routinely displaced from her place of creative work to provide it an ongoing venue.[2]" It then says that Emily Dickinson never met Mabel Todd. What does "witness audibly the ongoing affair" mean and if they didn't meet how could she witness it? Also, if Dickinson was "displaced from her place of creative work" does that mean she left the house because her brother and Todd were there?
