Date of birth[edit]

MT's date of birth is wrongly given as 15 July 1933 in this article. This link clearly says he was born on Uttṛṭṭāti day of Karkidakom month of kolla varsham 1108. The corresponding English calendar date is August 9, 1933 and not 15 July. Also This link from Mathrubhumi correctly gives the birth date as August 9, 1933. Also here's another article which appeared in the Mathrubhumi Nagaram page dated 25 July 2016 (Uttṛṭṭāti day of Karkidakom), wishing MT on his birthday. Here I am posting the report in full, in case someone brings up in future other sources which claim his birth date to be 15 July.

MT's DOB is on 15 July 1933. The date you're claiming is according to Nakshatra which is part of Hindu Astrology. Hello. I agree several sources give his birth date as 15 July 1933. This probably is because recent editions of his books published by Current Books gives the birth date wrongly as 15 July. His actual birth date is the Uttṛṭṭāti day of Karkidakom in the Malayalam year 1108 (See sources 1 and 2). The corresponding Malayalam calendar date is August 9 (and not July 15 or August 10 as another user claimed). Also I cross checked the date with some of the older editions of his books and the date mentioned was August 9. Also some of the web sources rightly gives the birth data as August 9. As I mentioned above, that date of birth is according to Hindu Astrology. Even MT's daughter has confirmed this in today's news report featuring her by Asianet. There is no point in including Hindu astrological DOB in Wikipedia. --Joseph 💬 12:27, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I think your were confused by my comment. There are no two birth dates. August 9 is the date corresponding to his birth date as per Malayalam calendar. I have done some research into this and has reconfirmed with several old editions of his books. I watched the interview with his daughter. She does not make a mention of his actual birth date or Nakshatra but only confirms that he was born in the month of Karkkidakom. For your information, 15 July 1933 was not even in the month of Karkidakom. So please reach a consensus before you make edits in the page. Malayala Sahityam (talk) 12:44, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

She has mentioned നക്ഷത്രം വരുന്ന ദിവസം. Also, she has mentioned ജന്മദിനത്തിലും പിറന്നാളിലും. Both are different as I know. ജന്മദിനം എന്നത് ജനിച്ച ദിവസത്തെ ആസ്പദമാക്കിയാണ്. എന്നാൽ പിറന്നാൾ എന്നത് ജനിച്ച ദിവസത്തിലെ നക്ഷത്രത്തെ ആസ്പദമാക്കിയാണ് ആചരിക്കുക.--Joseph 💬 12:52, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I will update the sources with archived links. Sometime ago I had also gathered some screenshots from some of his older edition books, which writes the birth date correctly as 9 August. I will try to upload them too. The Mathrubhumi link says the birthday is on July 25, because that year Uttṛṭṭāti was on July 25 and not on August 9. This year it’s on July 12 if I am right. And his actual birth date is 25 Karkidakom 1108 = Uttṛṭṭāti day = 9 August 1933.Malayala Sahityam (talk) 20:08, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Malayala Sahityam: The same Mathrubhumi which you've quoted for the archived link has published this news report yesterday which clearly mentions his DOB as July 15, 1933. I'll quote it here: മലയാള ഭാഷയുടെ അഭിമാനമായ എഴുത്തുകാരന്‍ എം.ടി വാസുദേവന്‍ നായര്‍ക്ക് ഇന്ന് 87ാം പിറന്നാള്‍.1933 ജൂലായ് 15-നാണ് കൂടല്ലൂരില്‍ എം.ടി. വാസുദേവന്‍ നായര്‍ ജനിച്ചത്. പക്ഷേ, നാള്‍ പ്രകാരമുള്ള ജന്മദിനം കര്‍ക്കടകത്തിലെ ഉതൃട്ടാതിയാണ്. If the DOB July 15 was incorrect, will his daughter Aswathy Nair talk about him in the news aired by Asianet yesterday? She'll definitely correct them. I know Facebook is not considered as a reliable source. Anyhow, MT's daughter has confirmed the date July 15 in a Facebook comment. It appears that reaching a consensus here is rather difficult. The most authentic affirmation is from M.T.'s daughter, Aswathy Nair but it has appeared in Facebook which cannot be taken as a reliable source. (Fb comment) Facebook also has a page on M. T., maintained by his fans where the date is given as July 15, 1933. (M.T. Fans page) A couple of days back, the media celebrated M.T.'s birthday as July 15th. Twentyfour News, (Misty Fog Media). On the other hand, there are many sites which mention August 9, as the birth date. I would suggest the date is left unspecified in the infobox, but with a link to Notes section where the ambiguity may be explained. MT's daughter Aswathy Nair has given the following response to my personal query: "As per official records it is July 15th 1933. We don't know why it was given so in his school records etc which continued to be followed till date. Star is Uthrattathi in Karkitakom. No doubt about that." So I also agree with jojo@nthony and 991joseph to leave the date unspecified in the infobox and lead section. Date of birth[edit]

MT celabreted his 89th birthday last year at a movie set 15 July. So the debate is over.

The discrepancies between nakshatra and greogrian calendar date has various causes. nakshatras are based on position of the moon. Gregorian calendar is based on the position of the sun. Calendars in India was reformed in 1955. Starting date of Malayalam calendar year 1129 was reset to 17 August 1953 during reformation. any date before that have a possiblity of mismatch. Prior to calendar reformation, regional calendars were based on panchangas published by religious authorities or astrologers which are prone to errors. 10:59, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
