Biograpies of the Guggenheims with a chapter on RMG describe him as ... er... a highly colourful character, but ill-fitted (!!!!) for the role of ambassador. Though it was represented as being for the usual "personal reasons" he was effectively called back to Washington and forced, I think by "Vicuna Coat" Sherman Adams, Eisenhower's Chief of Staff, to resign to prevent further embarassment to the United States. His most notorious exploit was when he flipped a spoon (his persistent habit) at a state banquet and it flew down the ....um...decolletage of a minor royal or other "personage of dignity." Bad enough, but he then proceded to retrieve it with his bare hands....Oh oh! Next boat home!

All this (and more!) is documented in reputable biographies. I had them out from the library last year for a project, and if I get them again I will try to expand the article with proper references. —--FurnaldHall (talk) 12:18, 8 August 2008 (UTC) [reply]
