Name in English sources[edit]

I think some users are confusing "people" with "places". We are speaking about the use of proper "person" names of any language (in this case Turkish) with Latin script in English. See Mıgırdiç Margosyan as an example please. --E4024 (talk) 12:27, 7 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't mind using Turkish names for these people but I think we can definitely agree that we need redirects (i.e. Mıgırdiç Margosyan with Mgirditch Margosyan). However, the article names I have always believed should be in an English variation simply because 1) it is an English wikipedia 2) The Ç,Ğ,Ş,Ö, and etc. aren't found on an English keyboard. 3) Not too many English speakers know that Ş is a "SH". Neither do I have those letters in my keyboard but writing on a traditional "English" keyboard I find everything easily. (Try writing s instead of ş in the search box and see.) On the other hand, using the "special characters" I can easily correct your mistakes in Turkish language; which I do not know why you insist on committing. Is it simple laze (WP is a voluntary work) or are you trying to "detach", "differentiate" things and people from their roots? (This is not a question. No replies expected.) At first I recommend you to read WP:COMMONNAME. We prefer titles that are used in reliable English-language sources (e.g. Soner Cagaptay (Turkish: Soner Çağaptay). Some users think this person is Turkish. But he is notable with his participation to the Olympic games during the Ottoman era. There is no sources on his info during the Republic of Turkey. The some characters like Ç,Ğ,Ş,Ö, were introduced into Turkish language after 1928/1929. Users must not try to Turkify person/name of person with his/her ethnocentric POV. I try to avoid users with an agenda and am going to ignore the personal attacks. Indeed there is no need to respond to non-arguments but simply in the name of the truth: Almost all the sources are "Turkish" sources. Even Agos, the newspaper of the Turkish Armenian community, and one of the sources uses the name just as I have written it: Mıgırdiç Mıgıryan. Takabeg and Dr K. appreciate the point but no WP:DIACRITICS doesn't not mean that 100% of 20th Century Turkish names are written in Turkish on en.wp, unless they take foreign citizenship. This bio would be either Turkish (Mıgırdiç Mıgıryan) or Armenian (Mkrtich Mkryan), we won't invent a third Anglo-Turko-Armenian name unless there's very very good reason. E4024 in this case is right that the article should choose between either a real Turkish name or a real Armenian name. Please let E4024's move stand. Cheers. We do not even know if MM was still alive when the latin alphabet was introduced in Turkey, so there is no way to know if he has had an official latin-Turkish name. To confuse matters even more, the name is written differently in three of the English language sources that Takabegs search for "Migir Migiryan" reveals: In Mallon/Buchanan he is called "Mığır Mığıryan", in Mallon/Widlund "Mıgır Mıgıryan" and in Wallechinsky "Migir Migiryan". Add to this that he in the offical records of the 1912 Olympics is called "M. Megherian", and the result is chaos. My vote would probably be for "Mıgır Mıgıryan" as a kind of compromise, but it would be nice if someone who knows Turkish could explain where the -diç ending comes from.
