any studies on how Soundscan changed the industry?

Anyone know if there are any studies or articles on how Soundscan actually transformed the industry, in terms of promotion and charts? It seems to have eliminated a major source of chart fraud, and "alternative music" such as Nirvana's Nevermind suspiciously exploded onto the charts precisely after the Billboard Hot 100 Soundscan transition. In fact I read something in a Nirvana book (by Azerrad, I think) about how promoters used Soundscan data to get "Teen Spirit" playlisted - they'd phone the stations, note that the station had already added (e.g.) Def Leppard, and then point out that Nevermind was blowing away Def Leppard in local sales. I would suspect someone somewhere must have done a fantastic study of the transformative impact of Soundscan on the industry, esp. promotion and charts. Any idea?
