Merge proposal[edit]

That famous people were educated at this school does not in itself establish any notability. Please establish notability before removing the {{merge school}} template. Fmph (talk) 06:46, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The school has a very lengthy list of notable alumni including many prominent members of the Royal Family. A number of the headmasters are notable in their own right. The school has a hundred-year history. There will inevitably be many further sources available to expand the article. It makes no sense to merge this school with the Wikipedia page on Wokingham. It would be quite impractical with so many notable people associated with the school. I see no reason to have a merge template on this article. Dahliarose (talk) 22:11, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have to disagree. The guidance is very clear. Just because someone notable attends a school does not make that school notable. Maybe we should WP:AFD it and let the community decide. Fmph (talk) 06:31, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You'd be wasting the community's time taking this to AFD. Articles for notable schools such as this never get deleted let alone merged. Notability relies on the existence of reliable sources. The fact that so many notable people have attended the school means that sufficient reliable sources will exist to establish the school's notability. People want to know which school famous people attended. It is therefore totally inappropriate to merge an article which has so many notable people attached to it. Why not spend some time instead improving the article and finding more sources. Dahliarose (talk) 16:12, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If anyone wants to waste their time taking this to AFD, that's their business. While, in general, non-secondary schools are merged/deleted, this ain't going to be one of them. All this is going to do is set off a mad scramble to find sources, and its going to leave the nominator with egg dripping down their face. LonelyBeacon (talk) 17:38, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per Dahliarose and LonelyBeacon. Ludgrove School clearly meets WP:N. Moonraker (talk) 06:14, 10 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose – have to agree with all the opposers above. Merging makes no sense as it would overwhelm the target, and afd would be pointless. Occuli (talk) 17:19, 10 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strongly Oppose - Just because it can be deleted doesn't mean that it should. There is massive notability inherited in this case. -danjel (talk to me)
Perhaps you could add some of that notability to the article, together with reliable sources to back it up?Fmph (talk) 12:52, 13 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong Oppose - While notability is generally not inherited from notable alumni, none of our rules are graven in stone, and guideline essays are not policy. IMO this particular school has more than sufficient reasons for asserting notability to make it an exception to any guidelines, and it should be retained as a stand-alone article. Moreover, sending the article to AfD would be a serious waste of administrative time. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 10:08, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - What other school has Bumble's puppies - and had Diana's kids as students? --GroveGuy (talk) 06:01, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestions for article improvement[edit]

My first pat answer to this is always to go to: the article guidelines for school articles. They aren't set in stone, but they do given an excellent overview of what assessors look for when assessing school articles.
Since there isn't much here for now, I would start with the simple suggestion of making sure there there are adequate sources for the alumni. Finding a few independent sources to help keep someoen from embarassing themselves by trying to delete/merge this would be helpful too. LonelyBeacon (talk) 17:38, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I will also throw this out: alumni need to meet the notability threshold to be included in that list. There are a few on that list that may not meet the notability threshold (someone more familiar with the people would be better to judge than I). If they don't meet the notability threshold, then they need to be removed. LonelyBeacon (talk) 17:55, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for helping to improve the article. I agree that if references can't be found then the alumni need to be thrown out. There are a lot of useful references on Google Books [1], including one on the history of English preparatory schools which has information on the early history of Ludgrove and its rich sporting tradition. The school has a published history which I've added to a new section on further reading. Dahliarose (talk) 16:09, 10 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
